🐾 Why do some German Shepherds carry things in their mouths when they’re excited?

You may notice your German Shepherd grab a toy, blanket, or another safe object when you come home, get ready for a walk, or start a game. For some dogs, carrying something is simply part of how they express excitement and engage with the world.

German Shepherds were developed as working dogs, and many enjoy having an activity that gives them a job to do. Carrying a toy can add purpose to a greeting or help channel energy into an appropriate object. Some dogs may also find holding a familiar toy comforting when they’re highly stimulated. Each dog is an individual, though, and this behavior isn’t exclusive to German Shepherds.

You can encourage the habit by keeping suitable toys nearby and praising your dog for choosing them. If your dog grabs unsafe items, calmly trade for a toy or treat rather than chasing them. And if the behavior suddenly changes, includes chewing or swallowing objects, or comes with guarding, take a closer look and seek professional guidance.

That happy little toy parade may be your German Shepherd’s way of saying, “I’m excited—and I brought something for the occasion!” 🐕

He’s learning to wait patiently and take turns when treats are being handed out. We’re also working on his guarding tendencies, building calm and positive habits one step at a time. 💛

When you’re this excited for your very first day of board & train! 🤣🐾 Meet Winston!

My first priority with every new dog is helping them feel happy, comfortable, and secure in their new surroundings. Building a strong working relationship starts with trust, patience, kindness, mutual respect—and plenty of fun! ❤️

Remember: this is Winston’s FIRST DAY—no training has been done yet! This is his welcome, his chance to settle in, and our opportunity to start building that connection. 🐶

🧠🐾 GERMAN SHEPHERDS: “LET ME FIGURE THIS OUT!”

Did you know research has revealed an interesting side of the German Shepherd’s problem-solving style?

A 2022 study published in Scientific Reports tested 1,002 dogs across 13 breed groups. German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois were the two breeds most likely to show no human-directed help-seeking behaviour during an unsolvable task—taking an independent approach to the challenge.

That finding describes behaviour in one specific test. It doesn’t mean every German Shepherd behaves the same way or never needs guidance!

When Buttercup first began her training journey, she struggled with social manners and appropriate interactions around unfamiliar dogs and people. She frequently jumped up to greet others, had difficulty respecting personal space, and displayed nipping behaviours when she became frustrated or didn’t get her way. She also lacked some of the foundational manners needed to navigate social situations calmly and appropriately.

Buttercup has come an incredible distance since then. Through consistent training, guidance, and structure, she has made significant progress in learning appropriate behaviours, developing better impulse control, and understanding the importance of boundaries.

🐾 WHY DO DOGS GET THE ZOOMIES?

One second your dog is calm. The next, they’re racing in circles like they’ve been launched from a cannon! 🚀🐶

These sudden bursts of energy are commonly called “zoomies.” The technical term is Frenetic Random Activity Periods—or FRAPs.

Zoomies may happen when a dog is:

⚡ Releasing built-up energy
🎉 Feeling excited or playful
🛁 Celebrating after a bath
😮‍💨 Releasing tension after an intense experience
🌙 Responding to a predictable time of day
🚪 Finally free to move after resting or being confined

Occasional zoomies are usually a normal part of canine behaviour and don’t automatically mean your dog needs more exercise.

The key is safety. Give your dog room, move breakable objects and keep them away from slippery floors, stairs, roads and other animals who may not appreciate the sudden chaos.

If zoomies happen constantly or your dog struggles to settle afterward, consider whether they may need more structure, mental enrichment, rest or help regulating their arousal.

Wren is currently enrolled in the AmyZ Signature 6 Program. She experiences anxiety and significant fear in unfamiliar situations, as well as in some situations and around some people she already knows.

Wren is making progress, and continued patience will be important as she works through these challenges. Building her confidence takes time. It is also essential to recognize when to gently encourage her to try something new and when to give her space, so she can progress without becoming overwhelmed. This thoughtful approach will support her transition and help set her up for continued success.
