Stabilizing a broken coffin bone on a 2 year old warm blood yesterday. The clips behind the bridge of the hoof capsule will help keep the fracture from displacing. Sole is packed with shore 15 glue-u impression material to minimize ground force reaction.

She will be on stall rest for the foreseeable future.

It’s been a busy start to the beginning of the summer and as such we are a little behind. However we need to send a huge congratulations to Miss Aspen Green for her win at the Wildrose Blacksmithing Championships a couple weeks ago. Aspen graduated Olds College Advanced Farrier Science in 2021 at the top her class and has just entered her second year of apprenticeship.

All the hard work is paying off! Great job young lady. Keep swinging.

We did a wonderful lecture/discussion/dissection this last weekend. Brenda Fitzgerald and the students from the Natural Touch Equine Therapy Program provided an opportunity for us to speak our thoughts of all things farriery. One day was a lecture and round table discussion. Day two was a trim demo discussing what we look for in balance and then we finished with a few hours of guided lower limb dissection. Thank you Audrey Williams for your exceptional contributions.

What a great weekend with the Mile 0 crew! Many thanks to Matt Roberson and Rachel for their hospitality this weekend it was so nice to go to some continuing education again. Adam Degenstein as always was a fabulous clinician and the time with Dr Mike Ross was well worth the drive. I’ve always wanted to shoot some radiographs in formable footing pre and post trim as well as post shoeing. Thank you as well to Blue Bell Farm Serviced for the sponsorship. There nothing quite like getting to spend the weekend with like minded professionals!!

This is such a cool sequence of how the anatomy of the lower limb works under load.

Sometimes when your horse blows a crack it warrants further investigation. Due to opposing limb lameness and improper limb loading this crack has been a bit bothersome. I pulled the heartbar off this guy got some images and changed the shoe package.

Thank you to Dr Cerah Bowyer at Barr north Veterinary service for the hock injections and a definite diagnosis.

We have bilateral articulating arthritis in his hocks. As well as significant mineralization in both deep flexor tendons in the fore limbs and a large lesion in the distal sesamoid of the right front. Most owners would call this navicular disease.

Poor guy is already much sounder after a couple days.
