➖ While adoption is one of the most rewarding choices you can make, it’s often misunderstood… ➖
❌ MYTH #1: Rescue dogs are “damaged,” unpredictable, have trauma/issues, or are aggressive.
✔️ Truth: A huge number of dogs enter rescue due to human circumstances — not behavior problems. Reasons include moving, illness, job loss, divorce, death in the family, or financial constraints. These dogs are often well-mannered, affectionate, and simply looking for stability after life threw them a curveball.
❌ MYTH #2: You don’t know what you’re getting.
✔️ Truth: Many rescues complete temperament testing and behavioral assessments. If the dog has been in foster care, you’ll get valuable insight into how they behave in a home environment — with kids, cats, routines, and visitors. In fact, you often know more about an adult rescue than an 8-week-old puppy, whose temperament and needs are still developing.
❌ MYTH #3: You can’t get the breed you want.
✔️ Truth: Alberta is home to several fantastic breed-specific rescues (Example, “Henry” — pictured — who currently waiting for his forever home).
❌ MYTH #4: All rescue dogs have trauma.
✔️ Truth: Not every rescue dog has had a traumatic past — and even those who have are incredibly resilient. With the right structure, care, and training, they often adapt beautifully and go on to live happy, confident lives.
❌ MYTH #5: Older dogs can’t learn.
✔️ Truth: Older dogs are often easier to train! They’re more emotionally mature, have better focus, and are past the chaos of the puppy stage. Many already have basic manners, are house-trained, and adjust quickly to new routines.
❌ MYTH #6: It’s harder to bond with a rescue.
✔️ Truth: The bond with an adopted dog is often stronger — many truly seem to know they’ve been given a second chance. Their loyalty and connection run deep, and it’s incredible to witness the transformation once they feel safe and loved.
