Don’t shave my dog, you don’t have to, but brush it daily…

Well, when it’s matted to the skin, it’s better to shave it down.

Here is a Big Hooray, for one of our own. Roxanne’s Zoe was attacked by a Coyote in her own backyard.

Grabbed head-on by the muzzle, the Coyote had Zoe by the flew (lips) and Zoe fought pulling backwards, the Coyotes canines ripped through the lips and she got away.

Zoe survived the attack, the surgery, and is resting quietly at home.

Sending love and strength your way Zoe. You’re good little gal.

🐾 Myths & Clarifications:

Myth: “Long coat keeps a dog warmer, so more fur = better protection.”
Reality: It’s not just length, but the type and condition of the coat, undercoat vs guard hairs, matting, insulation, and cleanliness. A long, matted coat can trap moisture, lose insulating value, and actually leave a dog colder. Good grooming matters.
For example, in a breed like a Siberian Husky, their double coat is designed for cold, but an “excessively long or wooly” coat is actually less effective, and can trap snow, ice, or matts.

Myth: “If a dog has a thick coat, they never need a coat or sweater.”
Reality: Some thick- or double-coated breeds are very cold-tolerant, yes — but that doesn’t mean they’re impervious. Protection may still be needed in extreme cold, wind, wet snow, or when they’re older or ill.

Myth: “More time outdoors in winter is fine as long as the dog looks fine.”
Reality: Even if a dog seems okay, cold exposure accumulates; wet fur, wind chill, frozen ground, salt or chemical de-icers on paws all add risk. Shorter frequent walks may be better than long sessions in freezing weather.

Gear & other considerations:

Choose good winter gear: coats, boots (if applicable), reflective elements (for walks in low light).

Be aware of signs a dog is too cold: shivering, reluctance to go outside, lifting paws, tail tucked, cold ears/paws.

Monitor for frostbite or hypothermia in extreme conditions: pale or bluish skin on extremities, uncontrolled shivering, lethargy.

Nutrition & indoor safety:

Dogs may need slightly higher energy intake in cold weather (especially if outside more) to maintain body heat — but always check with your vet for specifics.

Provide warm, draft-free bedding, raised off cold floors if possible, so they’re not lying on cold surfaces.

Ensure they remain hydrated — cold conditions don’t remove the need for fresh water; consider using a heated bowl if water might freeze outdoors.
But as most pups are not accustomed to living outside, this isn’t a problem.

Grooming & coat care…

1) Regular brushing prevents mats and tangles which can trap moisture and cold; especially important for longer- or double-coated breeds.

2) Avoid shaving or cutting a dog’s coat too short in winter (unless recommended by vet/groomer); their undercoat or guard hairs often provide natural insulation. Do step 1 properly and you won’t have to painfully de-mat or shave down below the mats.

3) Use moisturizer / conditioning treatments to combat dry skin in winter’s low humidity and dry indoor air. Burts Bees makes a Nose and Paw Balm, our pups love it.

✅ Best Practices for Winter Care
Keep warm & safe.

Dogs with short coats or lean frames can get cold quickly. For example, short-haired breeds like Greyhounds, Whippets, and dogs that have been shaved/clipped may need extra protection.

Use a well-fitting winter jacket or coat for those at risk. Choose insulated or water-resistant jackets when outside in snow, wind or freezing temps.

Limit time outdoors in severe cold, especially for puppies, older dogs, those with health issues, or thin-coated dogs.

Watch their paws, ears, tail and belly — areas in contact with snow or ice are vulnerable. Wipe off snow, salt or ice after walks; keep paws dry.

What’s Happening in the grooming world these days? From Florida to Alaska, and everywhere in between.

Many customers often arrive pre-primed for conflict.

One partner wants a clean, practical groom; the other projects emotion onto the pet and turns it into a moral argument (“you hurt my dog,” “that’s not my dog anymore”).

When the groomer does exactly what was agreed — especially on matted coats — the outcome looks dramatic, and the emotional partner feels blindsided.

Instead of owning the misunderstanding, they shift blame and demand compensation or refunds.

This isn’t about being “woke” — it’s about entitlement wrapped in moral language.

We have a release form and will start asking clients to sign said “Grooming Release Form”.

“Owners must assume responsibility for haircut length, agreed upon at drop-off.”

“Refunds are not provided for aesthetic preference.”

We will require both owners (if two arrive) to initial or verbally agree to the plan before the groom begins.

During intake, we use neutral, factual language: “I’ll need to take the coat shorter to remove the matting safely.
“Humanity over vanity” is our motto!

That will make your pet more comfortable and prevent skin issues.”

“Once we start, we can’t change the plan mid-groom.” - This eliminates ambiguity and puts responsibility where it belongs — on the decision made together.

Happy Thanksgiving to all…
