Tick-Borne Diseases in Horses: What You Need to Know

Tick-borne diseases are becoming increasingly common in horses across many regions. Two of the most significant concerns are Lyme Disease and Anaplasmosis—both of which can seriously impact your horse’s health if left untreated.

Clinical Signs to look for:

Lyme Disease
• Stiffness, lameness (often shifting weight)
• Behavioral changes or sensitivity when grooming
• Poor performance or reluctance to work
• Muscle wasting or weight loss
• Occasionally, neurological signs

Anaplasmosis
• High fever
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Limb swelling (especially in the lower limbs)
• Ataxia (incoordination)

These symptoms can mimic other conditions, making diagnostic testing essential to confirm infection.

Prevention

• Regular grooming to check for ticks, especially around the tail, mane, chest, and ears.
• Use of approved topical repellents or sprays.
• Maintain pasture areas: clear brush, mow regularly, and manage wildlife that may introduce ticks.
• Annual physical exams with your vet to spot subtle signs.

Early detection and prevention are key to protecting your horse from the serious effects of tick-borne diseases.
If you notice any of the above signs or want to test your horse for Lyme or Anaplasma exposure, or start prescribed tick preventatives contact your veterinarian today!

Ever seen a horse cheek tooth up close? After a recent extraction, we couldn’t help but admire its beauty! These premolars are massive, with intricate ridges and a pearly sheen—perfectly designed for grinding tough forage. The enamel folds and cementum layers tell a story of strength and adaptation. Nature’s artworks. 😌

Everybody’s smiling when they’re learning how to float teeth 😁

Dr. Allossery and Dr. Wilson (as well as our generous technicians Hannah and Shevaugn!) recently volunteered their time to help OVC vet students learn more about equine dentistry. The event was put on by the OVC Equine Club. Horses were provided by LongRun.

As many of you have heard Dr. Matt say, vet school doesn’t have much time in the curriculum for dentistry. These events are a good way for students to start their careers with a better foundation of understanding.

Is your horse trying to tell you something?

This horse was a new patient to our practice, it had been on an unknown compounded formulation of omeprazole (not dispensed by us) for 30 days. After the medication the horse was still exhibiting signs of gastric ulcers. The owner had us complete a gastroscopy where we discovered extensive lesions, including actively bleeding ulcers in the squamous areas of the stomach, and significant ulcers in the glandular region as well.

You never know what’s going on until you take a look!

Can anyone guess some common signs of stomach ulcers?
