Clear leadership makes puppy training easier.

Comment LEADER and we’ll send you the McCann Dogs Leadership Assessment to help you better understand your relationship with your dog.

Puppy training works best when communication is clear, consistent, and fair, like gently yet firmly showing your dog how to follow through on a “sit” command they’re choosing to ignore. Leadership in dog training isn’t about being harsh or militant. It’s about becoming someone your dog trusts for direction and guidance.

The wrong crate setup can make potty training harder.

One of the most important puppy training tips is making sure the crate is appropriately sized so your puppy isn’t tempted to potty at one end and rest at the other. To help prevent accidents in their crate during potty training, avoid oversized spaces and consider removing extra bedding that can encourage puppies to soil softer surfaces.

These potty training tips are designed to help your puppy build good habits early while keeping the crate feeling like a clean, safe den. As your puppy becomes more reliable with house training, you can gradually make the crate setup more comfortable.

Does your puppy struggle to settle down? Start here…

Instructor Kayl shows how to teach your puppy to stay on their bed step-by-step, rewarding calm behaviour and gradually building duration. Once your puppy understands the bed stay exercise, it becomes your “Place” command, a cue that tells your dog to go to their bed, relax there calmly, and stay until released.

Why every puppy should learn a bed stay:
🧠 Puppy training that teaches calm behaviour and relaxation
🏡 A practical dog training skill for mealtimes, guests, and family time
🚪 Better impulse control so your puppy learns to wait instead of jumping, bolting, or demanding attention

A well-behaved puppy isn’t just active and playful. They also need to learn how to relax and settle calmly around distractions.

How long can your puppy hold their bed stay? Tell us in the comments.

Teaching impulse control at the doorway can make a huge difference in everyday puppy training.

This puppy training tip helps build a solid stay while teaching your puppy that not bolting through doorways is part of calm, thoughtful behaviour. Reward often for staying in position, and if your puppy is ready for more of a challenge, practice opening the door while using a long line for safety and success.

Exercises like this don’t just teach manners. Teaching impulse control also helps establish leadership and builds your puppy’s ability to listen to you around excitement and distractions.

This puppy crate training trick can make nighttime easier for everyone. 😴✨

For nighttime crate training, Kayl will often place the puppy’s crate up on her bedside table so her puppy is face-to-face with her at night. That connection can help puppies feel more secure, and it also makes it easier to hear the difference between settling noises and a puppy that truly needs a potty break.

As bedtime crate training improves and the puppy becomes more confident sleeping through the night, the crate can gradually move to the bedroom floor. Every family is different, but setting your puppy up to feel safe and successful from the start can make a big difference.

If you’re not 90% sure your dog will come back, don’t test recall off leash.

Recall training is built through consistency, repetition, and smart management before freedom is ever introduced. Using a long line for dog training helps you safely practice off-leash skills while building reliable communication and better choices around distractions.

The 90% rule matters because every successful repetition strengthens your dog’s recall training. Set your dog up to succeed first, then gradually raise the challenge when they’re ready.

Stop using the “come” command unless you’re actively training it.

In recall training, “come” should be clear, consistent, and always reinforced so your dog learns it’s not optional. If you use it casually or when your dog might ignore it, you weaken the reliability of the cue.

For everyday moments like dinnertime, moving between rooms, or getting your dog’s attention on a walk, use a different word like “here,” “this way,” or “let’s eat,” or teach a cue like “touch,” so your “come” command stays strong and dependable when it really counts.

Puppy socialization is about exposure, not greetings.

In puppy training, puppy socialization should focus on calmly exposing your puppy to different environments, sounds, sights, surfaces, and experiences without overwhelming them. Puppy exposure can be as simple as walking on gravel, hearing traffic, seeing shopping carts, or feeling different textures under their paws.

One of the most important puppy training tips is understanding that socialization doesn’t mean your puppy needs to meet every dog or person they see. Building confidence through thoughtful exposure creates a more focused, adaptable dog in the long run.
