This is spot on. As groomers we can tell if your dog has had clear consistent training, they are much more confident for the grooming process. Training is a daily process and every interaction with your dog can be a training moment. We Love when dogs come into the shop calmly, with no anxiety. Most of their anxiety comes from you the owner saying things like, he so nervous, it's ok fluffy, awwwww. If you show confidence your dog will feel that. So walk in my shop like you own the place and give your dog the confidence they need to be away from you.

This sweet little guy Milo came in for a groom.
I could see at the door he was matted all over. His owner said Petsmart shaved him all over, head, ears, tail (not sure why it was not explained as to why the dog was shaved) but I said we’d be doing the same. I had the owner pop him up on my table to explain how poodle coats work and without at home maintenance this dog would be shaved every time.
I showed him the correct brush and comb, and techniques to effectively maintain a poodle coat. The owner was very eager to learn.
Our first grooming session with this little guy was nerve racking as he was terrified . I believe it was his second grooming session at 2 yrs old, (we like to start them as early as possible to set them up for grooming success), this guy has missed a lot of training.
It took both Delaena and I working together to free this guy from his mats, so squirmy. We opted not to bath and blow dry him as he had been through some scary stuff already. We had him come back the following week to finish up with the bath and a tidy up trim. He is on a 4 week schedule to help him become a confident little guy in the shop. As he improves and his owner continues to brush and comb we will stretch it out to 6 weeks and then 8 .
Dematting a dog is torture to your dog and us as that is usually when we get bit, and we refuse to do it. We will help you learn to maintain a growing coat. I offer free, yes free brush out demos. Your dog or mine. lol I always have a dog that needs a brush out🐩 🐩 🐩 It will take about 20-30 minutes of your time for a demo but you will then have a dog that will never have to get a smoothie ever.

FYI a**l glands. I won’t express your dogs a**l glands unless you ask me. It is important to let the gland work as it was intended. If we groomers start doing it regularly the gland will need to be done by the groomer. Let’s just leave them alone🙂

Routinely squeezing🤏 healthy a**l glands can result in inflammation, impaction, abscesses and ruptures, don’t do it!⚠️

I just posted a brand new blog coaching you through how to get to the root of the scoot and keep your dog’s a**l glands healthy!

WHAT YOU DON'T SEE AT THE DOG GROOMERS.......
You dropped your dog off at the salon and picked them up few hours later - fluffy, fresh, and happy. But what you saw was just the tip of the iceberg.

You didn’t see your groomer arrive early to open up the salon, disinfect tools, lay out fresh towels, and check the day’s appointments. You didn’t see them look over your dog from nose to tail before even lifting a brush - checking the coat condition, skin, eyes, ears, nails, and weight.

You didn’t see the careful way they clipped around a wriggly paw, or how they paused to let your dog calm down during the bath. You didn’t notice the matting hidden beneath your dog’s topcoat, or the way the groomer worked slowly to avoid hurting the skin beneath it.

You weren’t there when they spotted a red patch of irritated skin, or a small lump you hadn’t noticed. You heard them gently mention it to you at collection - not to worry you, but because they genuinely care about your dog’s wellbeing.

And after you left, you didn’t see the clean-down , the floor swept, tables cleaned, blades oiled, messages replied to, notes written up for your next visit, and laundry on again.

All of that… for a price that’s often lower than what you’d pay for your own haircut. And your hairdresser?
They don’t have to bathe you, clip your nails, or hold you still while you try to bite the brush.

The truth is ……. dog grooming is so much more than a haircut.

It’s about health, hygiene, comfort, and trust. It’s about knowing dog anatomy, coat types, skin conditions, behaviour management, handling skills, and safe sc******ng techniques. It’s a profession that takes training, practice, and patience.
Most groomers got into this work because they love dogs. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be paid fairly for the physical, emotional, and skilled work they do every single day.

If your dog leaves their groomer happy, healthy and looking good - it’s not by luck. It’s because you have got a good groomer.
So next time, take a moment to thank them. Leave a review.

Tip them if you can. And above all - don’t undervalue them.
They’re doing far more than just washing the dog.
