Yup, that’s our toilet in a featured photo…I’ll explain..

Wiggle will guard resources like food, mostly at doggy meal times. He has never hurt anyone, but he does display his worry about food with much gusto, and I am grateful for that. It was a really clear message for me! That message wasn’t that I needed to train this behaviour out of him. The message I received, loud and clear, was that he needs extra space from the other dogs in the home at doggy meal time. The best way to stop a dog fight is to prevent it from happening in the first place. That means, in this scenario, I bring Wiggle in the bathroom and then start taking dog food out. He is grateful for my attention to this detail, he displays this by calmly and quietly heading down a gated hallway to the bathroom to patiently wait for me to fill his various enrichment feeders.

This management tool (the bathroom) helps to prevent Wiggle from rehearsal of undesirable behaviour and it lets him eat while feeling safe! That’s a win for the the whole household.

Lately our rescue, North Amity Dog Rescue Society, has been helping dogs out from the local pound. I’ve been assessing dogs with some of my dogs and yesterday I had the opportunity to take this big guy for a much needed outing. Leonard is the shelter’s longest resident, but North Amity is securing foster care, so he won’t stay cooped up for too much longer!

During our outing we started with some snifffs and I got a feel for his on leash behaviour, he seemed very polite, albeit he had some steam to burn off!! We had a great little run together and then he was wonderful to walk. I still didn’t ask for hardly anything from him, other than please don’t pull me over(😅), he’s likely 90-100lbs. I wanted to give him ample time to decompress and not be nagged at, just sniff, walk, run and watch - in no particular order! After 40 minutes I thought he was ready to show me if he could give some focus…and he did. What a gentleman.
He will be available for adoption soon with NADRS at: www.NADRS.org 🔜💗🐕‍🦺

Having some cots for your dogs outside is a great way to help them rehearse the behaviour we generally want when we are in the backyard - to chill out when we’re done having a play. When we focus on what we do want, we suddenly have something we can train! …it works great for kids, too. 😉

Here is a quick video of some fair play between Fox and Wiggle. I thought I would use this video to show why it’s a good idea to separate, especially large and small dogs, while you’re not at home. Even though these guys are buds and they play well together, so much could go wrong so fast, vets even have an acronym for it - BDLD. We use our upstairs and downstairs to separate our 7 dogs when we’re not home and in our last single floor home we used baby gates.

Where does your dog find the value when you’re out and about? Wiggle has been playing training games since he was a wee baby, the results speak for themselves - he loves to be near us! When we go to the park I don’t have to spend my time calling him back because he’s never more than 20-30 ft away.

How cool are Miss Taz’s markings?! This show stopping girly, along with her Mum and Dad, are getting some top ups on recall and just listening in the teenage phase in general. Teenage dogs are not unlike teenage humans, pushing boundaries and pushing your limits. Be consistent and know that your hard work will pay off in the long run. Using games based, force free training methods keeps the relationship with your dog in a great place, giving you a dog who truly wants to listen to you!
