Miss Pearl came to see us for vaccines yesterday with a few of her housemates and we fell madly in love with her face, personality and outfit ❤️

She was the calmest, cuddliest best behaved girl for her exam and vaccines, how could you not love that face?!

We often think of GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus, or “bloat”) as affecting middle-aged, extra-large, deep-chested dogs. This past weekend, Atila reminded us that bloat and torsion can happen in many dogs, even those that may not fit the typical profile.

Atila is a 10-year-old male Coonhound who presented to our clinic after hours with abdominal bloating and repeated vomiting overnight. Thanks to his family recognizing the signs quickly and seeking immediate veterinary care, the RRVS team was able to surgically correct his gastric torsion and send him home with a positive prognosis.

We are all wishing Atila a smooth and speedy recovery! ❤️

Here are some important signs and risk factors that may help pet owners recognize GDV early:

⚠️ Common Signs of GDV:
• Restlessness or signs of distress
• Excessive drooling or salivation
• A visibly enlarged or firm abdomen
• Difficulty breathing
• Unproductive vomiting or retching
• Weakness, collapse, or inability to stand

⚠️ Factors That May Increase Risk:
• Eating one large meal daily
• Rapid eating
• Family history of bloat
• Middle-aged to older age
• Large or deep-chested breeds

Gastric dilatation (“bloat”) and GDV (“bloat with torsion”) can appear very similar during a physical exam and typically require radiographs and additional diagnostics to differentiate.

Dogs affected by GDV are often critically ill and may present in shock. Emergency treatment focuses on stabilizing the patient, relieving pressure in the stomach, and providing IV fluid therapy. Surgery may then be required to reposition the stomach and assess any affected tissue or organs. A gastropexy (where the stomach is tacked to the body wall) is commonly performed to help reduce the risk of future torsion.

GDV is considered a life-threatening emergency, and early veterinary attention greatly improves the chances of survival. If you suspect your dog may be experiencing bloat, seek veterinary care immediately!

☀️ Heatstroke season is just around the corner—let’s keep our pets safe and comfortable! 🌡️🐾

As temperatures rise, dogs, cats, and other pets are at increased risk of heatstroke, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. Unlike humans, pets can’t cool themselves as effectively, so even a short time in the heat can be dangerous.

🚫 Never leave your pet in a parked car—even for a few minutes.
💧 Always provide access to fresh, cool water and shaded areas.
🌳 Limit outdoor activity during peak heat (typically midday to early evening).
🐕 Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.
🔥 Remember: if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!

⚠️ Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, confusion, or collapse. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your pet to a cool area and seek veterinary care immediately.

A little prevention goes a long way. Let’s work together to keep our furry companions safe, happy, and healthy all summer long! 💙🐾

Behind every “funny clinic moment” is a team that’s seen it all — the chaos, the cuddles, the curveballs, and the quiet wins. 🐾

This World Veterinary Day, we’re celebrating the people who show up every single day for your pets — through emergencies, tough decisions, happy checkups, and everything in between.

Yes, we laugh (a lot — see video 🎥), but we also care deeply, work tirelessly, and carry the responsibility of your pet’s health with us long after the day ends.

To our fellow veterinary teams: we see you.
To our clients: thank you for trusting us.

Here’s to compassion, resilience, and a profession that’s equal parts heart and humor. 💙

🐾 National Lost Dog Awareness Day 🐾

Today is a reminder of how important it is to help keep our dogs safe and identifiable.

Simple steps, like ensuring your dog’s ID tags are up to date, keeping contact information current, and considering permanent identification such as microchipping, can make a meaningful difference if a pet ever becomes lost.

It’s also helpful to regularly check fencing, leashes, and collars to reduce the risk of accidental escapes.

At Rocky Rapids Veterinary Services, we’re here to support you with guidance on identification and preventative care for your pets.

Planning ahead can help improve the chances of a safe reunion.

They’re the first voice you hear, the first smile you see, and the steady calm in the middle of the chaos. 💙

This Veterinary Receptionist Week, we’re celebrating the incredible women who keep everything running smoothly at the front of our clinic — Michele, Lacey, and Amanda.

They juggle phones that never stop ringing, comfort worried pet parents, organize our days, and somehow still find time for kindness, laughter, and a reassuring word when it’s needed most. They are the heartbeat of our client care and an essential part of every visit.

We truly couldn’t do what we do without them.

And because no celebration is complete without a little fun — we’re sharing a video of them taking on a timed scavenger hunt around the clinic! It was a close race, but Amanda took the win by just 6 seconds 🎉

If you’ve ever been greeted, helped, or supported by Michele, Lacey, or Amanda, we hope you’ll join us in saying THANK YOU this week! 🐾

🐱 National Cat (Lady) Day 🐱

Today we’re celebrating everyone who shares their home (and probably their couch… and bed!) with one or more feline friends 💙

Cats each have their own unique personalities, preferences, and care needs. Whether your cat is playful, independent, or a professional napper, providing regular veterinary care, enrichment, and a safe environment can help support their overall wellbeing.

At Rocky Rapids Veterinary Services, we’re here to help you better understand your cat’s needs at every stage of life.

Tell us…. how many cats rule your household? 👀
