Kent Family Farms
Kent Family Farms has been a dream for many, many years. I (Ashton) grew up on a 142 acre hobby farm with Horses, Cows, Dogs, Cats, Chickens, Ducks, Turkeys and occasionally some Goats and other animals. I have always had a passion for animals and taking care of them, even from a very young age. I can’t describe the feeling of peace and comfort that they bring to me no matter the situation. You can be having a horrible day and can’t help but be happy when you come home to that wagging tail that loves so unconditionally. I know God had a magnificent plan when he made dogs (and all animals for that matter). They have and always will be a huge part of my life.
After moving out and going away to University, I decided to get my Bachelor’s in Biology and in the process maintained my focus on genetics throughout my University time. I married a man I love and am grateful for everyday and we have three truly amazing boys and the sweetest little girl. When we had our children we decided that I was going to become a stay-at-home Mom. This was a huge decision for me, as I am a very driven, social, career minded person by nature, but I have also always wanted to be a full time Mom and that would always trump any career that took time away from my kids if I could help it. We are grateful to have the ability to be able to make this choice. I am not one that easily sits still for too long though and like to be involved in lots of different things, especially with my kids or setting an example for my kids. One of the things that has always been on my heart and allows me to not only still be there for everything with my kids, but also give them an amazing experience growing up is dog breeding. Growing up we raised Golden Retrievers and I knew I always wanted to raise dogs again. It is an amazing and rewarding process that always brought so much joy to so many families and I wanted to continue that. Not only that, but it is a field that is so easily neglected or done for the wrong reasons, so we see many doing it improperly and I hoped that someday I could contribute constructively to that field.
So began my search for the perfect breed...
My heart has always been with Golden Retrievers, but my husband has some sensitivities to dander. On top of that a lot of the breedings I had been seeing were having more and more health issues. This is concerning to me, as health as a breeder should always be our foremost priority. I also (due to the dander) was looking for a breed that was better for those with allergies and had more versatility for different families lifestyles and sizes. I researched for a very long time and found many breeds that met the dander requirements but always would fall short for the temperament that I wanted or the health issues in that breed were not something I was wanting to work with. I then came across Goldendoodles. This wasn’t the first time I had heard of them. I just had dismissed the thought before because I grew up with Champion bred Golden Retrievers and doing a cross breed would be a big ‘No No’ in that world. But then I really looked without my already preset bias in place and actually looked at the research and the science behind the cross. I saw all the genetic benefits and I saw that they met every requirement that I was looking for in a breed. I was so excited! After a long time looking for the right dogs to start our breeding program we purchased our first breeding dog in 2011 to produce Goldendoodles and we couldn’t be happier with that choice!
