This is why I do what I do and so desperately want to keep doing it.

This is Ace. He was born into a rescue and removed from his mother and siblings at 3 weeks. The only reason I can come up with why they would do that is that he was rejected by his mother and at risk.

3-12 weeks is the most critical time of behaviour development in a dogs life. Without any teachers during this time, the brain will develop with stress and anxiety at the forefront.

Ace is what I call an anxiety bucket. The world is a scary place for him but he is still filled with love and joy. He’s the classic people pleaser. Or fawn response.

When we’re out with the pact, he gets to let loose. He runs like crazy, deeks around all the other dogs. Runs through ditches and puddles like a happy kid on a rainy day.

When else would Ace be able to feel such freedom and joy? When else would he be able to run out his anxious mind? When an anxious human exerts themselves with exercise they feel calmer, better. Same goes for dogs.

I know very well the feeling of being in constant fight or flight mode. It’s not fun. And it has serious consequences to your health.

I would love for this town to get a decent small dog park so dogs like Ace (and many others) can have somewhere to go and be free.

Until then, I’ll have to manage the environment as best I can for them. They deserve to have a little fun with friends.

Well, after nearly 9 years it has happened. I’m surprised it took this long. Yours truly is going to go internet viral for being a “Karen”.

I’m a huge fan of transparency and owning your own “stuff” so let me be perfectly clear what you’re getting with me.

If a rogue dog comes careening out of nowhere and starts chasing one of my fearful dogs like it’s prey, I will yell for you to call your dog back. If you do nothing, I will scream at you to call your dog back. If you STILL do nothing, it’s on. I don’t give a rats ass about your feelings. I will get your attention by any means necessary. And that usually means I’ll address you with a steady rhythm of insults, where profanity is basically the punctuation.

This as**at had absolutely no control of his dog and he didn’t care either. It’s people like him why I avoid other people at all costs. If you’ve ever seen me at the dog park, I usually about-face anytime I see anyone. I don’t care if you’re offended. Friend or foe, I prefer to keep my pack away from other dogs.

My purpose for what I do is so the small dogs that are fearful or reactive or just a bit anxious and need a boost have a place to grow their confidence and be free to be a dog. The park has become a place where as****es have no regard for others and don’t take any responsibility for their dogs.

Even after the heated exchange this guy kept following me unable to get his dog under control. All while puffing his chest life he’s some kind of big tough guy. I honestly thought he was going to hit me. But as I thought, he was all chest puffing and no follow through. Luckily I remembered the wise words of my boxing coach and I counter punch only. 😎

I finally got his dog on a leash for him and he was OFFENDED. I honestly can’t with humans these days.

Luckily Max was found after bolting from this dog. Thanks his swift acting parents. Max and I were working on trust exercises at the time hadn’t established enough of a bond for him to come out of the bushes for me.

The photos of max were just before this incident where he was having the time of his life and integrating so well with the pack. Now I’m not sure if he will be able to trust me.

Moral of the story is, mess with my dogs and you will meet momma bear. It won’t be pleasant for you.

Looking forward to my viral infamy.

Oh ya! When I told him the dog his dog chased away was now missing, he laughed and said good he’s glad. Super awesome fella.

Smoky the Yorkshire Terrier was a tiny dog with an enormous spirit who became one of the most remarkable animal heroes of World War II. Despite weighing only four pounds, Smoky accompanied airmen on dangerous missions.

During one mission, engineers needed to run a communications cable through a narrow, collapsed underground pipe under an airstrip—an impossible task for humans. Smoky was guided through the cramped tunnel, carrying the line in her mouth, saving soldiers hours of dangerous work and protecting them from exposure to enemy fire.

When not on duty, she performed tricks to lift morale, bringing laughter to weary troops and even to hospital patients recovering from injuries. Smoky’s behavior—brave, obedient, and spirited—embodied the unwavering loyalty that dogs so often show, reminding everyone around her that courage doesn’t depend on size.

If these trainers can teach a BEAR to sit with its legs out and endure a needle while blood is drawn, I should think a dog can be taught without the pain and suffering of being shocked and pinched and prodded.

Is it because it’s quick and easy that trainers use these methods? The inability for form a relationship with the animal? I just can’t fathom the reason for using pain and suppression to coerce instead of love and support to teach the animal to make the right choice.

Keep your pets inside! Keep their harness/collar on the entire night. Leashed up even to go in the back yard. Sudden bangs can make even the most chill dog bolt unexpectedly. If there’s a gap in the fence they will find it. Please keep them safe tonight. ❤️🐾

Lots of extra cuddles for the scaredy dogs. They need reassurance that the world isn’t ending.

Happy Halloween!
(Sorry for the scary pic of the skeleton 💀)

A major thank you to Petsearchers Canada Parker, Julia & Hunter for rushing to help me locate Wrigley yesterday. They are truly rock stars.

Wrigley bolted from a surprise dog rushing out of the bushes. I do my best to eliminate “surprises” and triggers for the dogs but when they happen, it’s important to know how the dogs will react. I knew Wrigley would immediately remove himself from the threat. But I didn’t see where he went. This was the bad part. He was hiding and I didn’t know where.

Thank you to Leanne and Bruce (Wrigley’s family) for coming right away to help. I’m forever in your debt. So many people helped search. Thank you all so much.

Petsearchers came right away and had their bloodhound, Hunter sniff Wrigley’s bed and then off they went. They asked me to stay at the entrance and keep an eye out and let everyone in the park know to avoid that area. I was antsy and didn’t enjoy not helping but I understood the need.

In the end Hunter and Petsearchers weren’t the ones to find Wrigley, but they are responsible for the outcome. If they weren’t there, I would have continued to panic (I felt so much relief with them there). If they didn’t tell me to sit at the entrance and wait, I wouldn’t have calmed down enough to start thinking rationally and get into Wrigley’s head.

Wrigley ended up near where the van was parked. In the thick impenetrable tall grass. One random thought to try and go around it and I caught a glimpse of of his adorable face. Just sitting camouflaged, waiting for me…for 5 hours.

So Petsearchers may not have found him in the end, they were responsible for him being found. I will forever be grateful to them for coming out so quickly.

If you want to send them a donation, they use them for people that cannot afford their services. I’ve donated and if you ever find yourself with a little extra, I would love it if you would to. Etransfer [email protected]

FOUND HIM!!!

In my 8 years working with small breed dogs, my biggest fear has been realized. Wrigley is alone and scared after being spooked by a dog bursting out of the trees suddenly. He bolted in fear. He is hopefully hiding out deep in the thick bushes but I don’t know. Petsearchers Canada has arrived and Parker and Hunter are working on finding him. I feel relief that they are here looking for him but my guts are still being ripped out thinking about how scared he is. The sun is going down and I can’t handle how terrified and alone he must be feeling. Think positive thoughts for Wrigley.

She did so much to advance our understanding of animals. We are so much closer to treating animals with respect and like equals. Still a long way to go, but every step forward is a win.

In a world full of anger and intolerance, be a Jane.

So much joy in watching Wilson and Leo become best friends. Wilson is a wee puppy that didn’t have the best start at life. But he sure is making up for it now with his new family (and new besties in the pack)
