Happy Halloween and Science Says Sunday!
Do dogs go through that "teenage phase" the same way that children do? There are a few things that research suggests about human adolescents. First of all, it is believed that children go through an earlier puberty if they have less secure attachments to their caregiver. Secondly, there is a phase of increased conflict behavior toward their caregiver. Lastly, it is believed that conflict behavior is heightened when the attachments to the caregiver are less secure. The researchers in this were interested to know if this is similar in adolescent dogs and their caregivers. And, yes! They found that female dogs with insecure attachments before reaching adolescence became reached sexual maturity earlier. Additionally, they found a phase of reduced trainability and responsiveness towards their caregiver during adolescence. This was more prevalent in dogs with a less secure attachment to their caregiver. These are important findings given that adolescence is a vulnerable time for dog-owner relationships and may possibly be a factor in high relinquishment and other relationship issues between dogs and their humans.

It's Science Says Sunday! Referential gestures are signals used to draw a person (or other nonhuman animal's) attention to a specific object, individual or event in the environment. It helps us communicate, non-verbally, our needs.

In the past, many non-human primates have been shown to possess an impressive amount of gesturals when interacting with humans. Dogs have a unique relationship with humans that centres on non-verbal communication with frequent interaction, making this study particularly interesting.

The study recorded 47 potential referential gesture events when observing dogs interacting with humans in their home. After analyzing the data, the researchers found evidence of 19 referential gestures performed by dogs during everyday communication with their humans that conform to what has been previously documented as the five features of referential signalling.
