Black Friday (it’s now Saturday I know haha) sale!

$30.00 each or two for $50.00. Sale will be good until 5:00pm December 1st, 2022.

**I’ve also learned that this species can tolerate lower humidity (60-70%) if kept watered, but best to keep near a humidifier. I have multiple plants growing in my plant room outside of a terrarium.**

For sale:

Begonia variabilis - Well established in 4” pots.

$50.00 each. Pick up in Dartmouth,NS. Shipping Canada wide at buyers expense.

Care:

Potting media: Young plants are potting in a free draining mixture of potting soil, perlite, bark chips and akadama, turface, or leca. Important qualities are a free draining, airy mix, that is still moisture retentive. Soil should never fully dry out.

Watering/fertilizing: I use a slow release fertilizer (typically osmocote) only refreshing when I repot my plants (every 4-6 months). If plants are showing signs of nutritional deficiency I water with a weak kelp liquid feed then repot soon after. Plants grown in pots are typically watered every week, or two depend on humidity and heat. Do not allow soil to go bone dry, or remain constantly wet/boggy. Variabilis has not seemed to be bothered by tap water in my experience. Depending on PH of potting mix/water a small amount of granular lime may benefit plants.

Temperature: Low of 18C through a high of 26C. I have had my mother plant warmer and cooler briefly without any ill effects but I would suspect prolonged exposure beyond this range would cause stress/encourage disease. Excessive heat (above 28C) can kill plants quickly.

Humidity: Mother plants grows vigorously at 80-100% humidity with minimal airflow. Plants for sale experience daily increases in humidity through that range after misting, but humidity in their current terrarium is usually around 60%. I have not tried this plant as houseplant. May do alright if grown near a humidifier. It will certainly thrive in a terrarium, cabinet, dome, etc. In closed environments just ensure water does not sit on leaves as these plants

Other notes:

Variabilis is a tuberous begonia species however has not behaved liked other tuberous species I grow. If happy, they seem to continue growing without dormancy. Plants may go dormant in the event of decreased humidity, watering, or photoperiods.

I may also be interested in trade for rarer Hoya, Begonia, terrarium plants, orchids, Philodendron lupinum, smaller bromeliad species, and certain dart frogs.

If you know me well enough you know I’m not a huge fan of cultivars, especially when it comes to Begonias. However I find it hard to find anything I don’t like about Begonia “taconite”. It’s easy to grow, vigorous, does not need really special soil or super high humidity and it’s a looker to boot. It has almost black leaves, that are very iridescent in the right light. Definitely one worth growing.

My female Xenosaurus platyceps was out inspecting her new terrarium and did not appreciate me getting in her space to make a few adjustments. For small lizards these guys have a lot of sass.

I’ve been keeping Dracula for a bit over a year now, and lost a few plants from my first import trying to figure out how to keep them happy. I did quite a bit of research before growing these, but it seems everyone does it slightly different based on their conditions, so it took a little trouble shooting. I have found that potting them in pure sphagnum until they set new roots is working out. However it’s not the best long term substrate in
My experience as the sphagnum goes pretty boggy within a few months.

After a roughly three month quarantine, as long as I’m seeing good root growth I put them in net pots and plant them in a mix roughly equal parts for bark fines, chopped sphagnum and perlite. This allows good airflow at the roots and crown, but never fully dries out. They are sprayed a couple times a day, and the fogger/fan runs on a low setting all day. I feed every watering with a very diluted organic feed, which seems to keep them happy. Other than that I occasionally flush the pots with clean water and so far so good. Looking forward to the cooler weather so I can start seeing some flowers.

This is the Dracula roezlii ‘San Francisco” I got from Ecuagenera about three months ago. It was struggling with some fungal issues initially, but that seems to be resolved and is now putting out some new growth.

Terrariums for sale.

I have a few 18”x18”x24” glass terrariums for sale. Used, but in good shape. Mesh may need to be replaced on top depending on buyers preference as they are a bit rusty and most have small holes cut in them for misting system nozzles. $80 each.

I have quite a few 12”x12”x12” terrariums as well. $30 each or $50 for two.

These are made for reptiles/amphibians, so can be used as intended, or can be used to grow plants that require higher humidity such as various Begonias, Hoya, orchids, small aroids, etc.

Pick up in Dartmouth, NS.

I still struggle with this sometimes, but it’s definitely worth holding onto your pots.

These Begonia picta seedlings were sown well over a year ago. I thought I lost them, along with many other seedlings when our basement flooded. I kept the pot set aside, and low and behold a few months ago I started seeing growth.

The chlorosticta melted shortly after bringing it home. I didn’t even think I had a stem left. I left it alone and a month later it started growing again.
