𝗜𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲—𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁.

At MPP, a designated “𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲” runs alongside the entrance to our plant. It provides a safe pathway through a carefully organized and monitored area, particularly under the supervision of our Safety team.

Along the corridor, the walls are filled with information: company news, security shift updates, upcoming events, contacts for agencies offering specialized services and, of course, our 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱.

Every month, we update this space with the results of our customer surveys—our NPS—and the "𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁" campaign has become quite popular. Within seconds, the first participants are ready to search for the correct answers.

This time, we changed the game slightly. We displayed two comments from our customer surveys, and readers had to identify which company had shared each one.

With a little friendly competition—and the incentive of a couple of free coffees—we all learn. We discover where we are doing well and where there are still opportunities to improve.

Being part of the process, seeing the results transparently, and even sharing opinions about new ideas have been well received by our plant employees. After all, who better to hear the voice of the customer than the people whose hands move every piece through production until it becomes the high-quality corrugated box our customer receives?

Congratulations to 𝗕𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 and 𝗢𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻 for staying sharp and reading through all the surveys until they found the correct answers!

How We Will Remember This Day.

We changed the date so the celebration could take place on a sunny day and everything could be just right. It was worth the effort—after all, a company does not celebrate 95 years every day.

For everyone who joined us, it will be a day to remember.

Although our founders could no longer be there in person, their presence could still be felt through the history, values, and vision that continue to guide Maritime Paper. As Leslie Bishop reflected during her remarks, we can only imagine what they would think if they could see today how far the company they helped build has come.

Our President, Sheldon Gouthro, opened the ceremony by taking us back to July 6, 1931, when Maritime Paper was established during the Great Depression. At a time of tremendous uncertainty, a small group of visionary business leaders chose to see opportunity.

Sheldon recalled our beginnings in a modest 30,000-square-foot facility on Almon Street, equipped with second-hand machinery, and shared the remarkable story of Mack Duncan. At only 22 years old, Mack drove for six days to Halifax to become Maritime Paper’s first General Manager—beginning an association with the company that would span 55 years.

It was a humble beginning, but, as Sheldon described, that small acorn already contained the potential to become something much greater.

Over the decades, it grew into a strong and resilient oak—deeply rooted in Atlantic Canada, strengthened by innovation, and sustained by the passion, pride, and dedication of its people.

Sheldon also reminded us that while history records the names of founders and business leaders, the true story of Maritime Paper belongs to the generations of people who have walked through its doors: those who showed up every day, learned their trade, solved problems, embraced change, trained the next generation, and took pride in producing quality work.

Randy MacMillan, President and CEO of Scotia Investments, spoke about the principles upon which we continue to build.

Safety is one of those fundamental principles. It guides the operations of Maritime Paper and all the companies across the Scotia Family of Companies.

He also emphasized our long-term commitment to our communities, the environment, and future generations. We invest in technology to create value, improve quality, and prepare our operations for the future—but our most important investment continues to be in people.

That investment strengthens employee engagement, develops our workforce, and allows us to continue moving forward.

As Randy said:

“We are just getting started. Wait to see the investment in the future.”

Leslie Bishop had the honor of closing the speeches as a representative of a family that has remained committed, across generations, to fulfilling its promises.

“Representing a business that is almost 100 years old is a great responsibility,” she reflected.

Speaking about her great-grandfather, R. A. Jodrey, Leslie described a legacy built through hard work, conviction, and a determination to provide “the best chance to succeed.”

There was one word repeated more than any other that morning: people.

Leslie pointed it out, and all three speeches reinforced it.

Our people are those who show up each morning and bring their best intentions to their work, regardless of the task. They are the people who learn when we introduce new technology, find the best solutions for our customers, build lasting relationships with our suppliers, and contribute proudly to every part of our value chain.

They also include our customers, partners, suppliers, and families, whose trust and support have helped Maritime Paper grow and succeed for 95 years.

Leslie captured that shared sense of commitment in a phrase that resonated with everyone:

“We are here. We built. We believe.”

And following Sheldon’s closing invitation, we gathered for a group photograph—a picture of those who were present to celebrate this milestone, but also of those entrusted with continuing to build Maritime Paper’s next chapter.

Thank you for your trust, your partnership, and your unwavering support over the past 95 years.

Together, we celebrate our history.
Together, we celebrate our people.
And together, we look forward with confidence to the next chapter of Maritime Paper’s story.
