On September 30, the Nova Scotia SPCA will honour National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – a day that honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.

The Nova Scotia SPCA is committed to the Calls to Action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Released in 2012, the Commission had 94 calls to action covering everything from education to child welfare to the law and more. It is our responsibility as Treaty People to first learn about the Calls to Action and then implement them in our day-to-day lives. We are committed to Calls to Action #6 - #12 and #92.

These Calls to Action are placed in our facilities across the province and all staff are encouraged to read them, ask questions and commit to implementing them daily.

The Nova Scotia SPCA is deeply committed to working with Indigenous partners and communities across the province. Our staff and facilities reside in Mi’kma’ki, the unceded and ancestral home of the Mi’kmaq people. The SPCA provides services to several Mi’kmaq nations from Malikaiq (Yarmouth) to Eskisoqnik (Sydney). We are honoured to work alongside the people of Mi’kma’ki.

We also recognize that October 1 is Treaty Day and marks the beginning of Mi’kmaw History Month. This year’s theme is A’tukwemk aq A’tukowinu’k – Storytelling and Storytellers. It honours the distinctive stories of Mi’kmaw people.

“I’m going to be pretty excited. That’s my design, that’s my art.”

In this special video, local Indigenous artist Sophie Amaral shares the inspiration behind an original piece of artwork commissioned by the Nova Scotia SPCA to mark Truth and Reconciliation Day.

This artwork will be on orange shirts that staff will be wearing on September 29, 30, and October 1.

A big thank you to Sophie for her hard work and the beautiful drawing!

We recognize that our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation goes beyond wearing an orange t-shirt; reconciliation is ongoing and needs to be incorporated into every day of the year.

We encourage everyone to learn more about the Truth and Reconciliation report at https://nctr.ca/publications-and-reports/reports/.

Today is National Check the Chip Day! 💙

If you have a new phone number or a change of address, remember to update your contact information with your pet’s microchip registry. 🐾 A microchip with up-to-date contact information could make all the difference.

Not sure who your pet is registered with? 🤔 Simple! Ask your vet to scan and check at your next exam. All pets adopted through the Nova Scotia SPCA are microchipped.

Although microchips are small, they have the possibility to make a big difference by reuniting pets with their families. 🏠

And we’re at the end of our ‘Pawsome Summer’ tips to help you and your pet have a fun and safe summer. ☀️

It’s time to talk plants, fruits and vegetables. Some pretty common ones that you can find in your own home or garden are a big no-no for pets. Here are a few to keep in mind:

❌ Toxic to cats; lilies, daffodils, ragwort, aloe vera, poinsettias, chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, etc.

🌱 Safe for cats: several herbs, such as basil, coriander, thyme; orchids, money tree, carrots, pumpkin, bananas, spinach, etc.

❌ Toxic to dogs: tulips, lily of the valley, azalea, avocado, grapes, mushrooms, onions, etc.

🌱 Safe for dogs: apples, blueberries, bananas, cucumbers, carrots, green beans, etc.

This isn’t a comprehensive list, and we encourage you to do more research and/or talk with your veterinarian.

What else should we add to this list? Let us know in the comments. ⬇️

We’re very close to the end of our ‘Pawsome Summer’ tips, but we still have great things to share. 🤩

Today, we want to chat about pet safety around water hoses. Share these tips with a fur parent in your life.

Water play is a great way to keep your pet cool and entertained during the summer. 🐾 And if you’re inclined to reach for the water hose in your garden, here are some tips to keep in mind:

☀️ Pressure. Some pets might get intimidated by the water pressure, so start with a gentle flow and watch your pet’s reaction.

☀️ Temperature. The water inside a hose can reach high temperatures when left in the sun. Allow the hot water to run out before letting your pet play.

☀️ Water quality. Water sitting in the hose for a while could have elevated levels of lead and chemicals that could be toxic to your pet if ingested. Always let the water run before playtime.

☀️ Don't let your pet drink excessive amounts of water, as too much can lead to water intoxication.

☀️ Keep a constant eye on your pet and watch for their reactions and behaviours.

Anything we missed on the list? Let us know in the comments.

With the soaring temperatures, this is a reminder to not leave pets in hot cars or outside in the sun for too long. See a pet trapped in a hot vehicle? 😲 Remember… ACT! A-C-T. ❗

A – Assess the situation. Signs that a pet may be in distress from overheating include exaggerated panting, rapid breathing, drooling, dark pink gums, lack of coordination, inability to get up, vomiting, convulsions or collapse. 😿

C – Collect information. Note relevant information about the vehicle (make, model, license plate, colour, exact location) and pet’s description (species, size, colour, breed if known). 🚗🐾

T – Time to call. ☎️ If you cannot find the owner and the animal is in distress, call your local police, RCMP, or the Nova Scotia SPCA at 1-888-703-7722 and stay at the vehicle until reinforcements arrive.

Please save and share this. It's not cool to keep pets in hot cars. 💙

What fun memories have you made with your pet so far this summer? 🐾

We want everyone to have a ‘Pawsome Summer’ and that includes having fun and staying safe. Today’s tips are about life jackets and water safety.

If you take your pet on adventures near water, a life jacket is a smart investment. Even the strongest swimmers need help. So, here are a few things to keep in mind:

🌊 Find the right life jacket for your pet. It shouldn’t be too loose or too tight. Do your research on what’s the best fit for your pet and your lifestyle, and keep in mind things like fit, weight, buoyancy, colour and attachments.

🌊 Introduce them to the life jacket slowly.

🌊 And slowly introduce them to water, while watching their reactions.

🌊 Get them used to the boat before a long trip.

🌊 Have all the essentials for your pet, including food, fresh water, pet-friendly sunscreen, and don’t forget to make a potty plan.

🌊 Have a first aid kit for both the pet and hoomans.

🌊 And keep a constant eye on your pet.

Do you have other tips for keeping your pet safe on a family trip? Leave them in the comments. ⬇️

Don’t forget to share this with a pet parent in your life! 📣

Fleas and ticks ❌ Pets!

The number of ticks in Nova Scotia has risen in recent years, and we know they loooove this warm weather. 😞 As you and your pet enjoy all the outdoor adventures, it’s crucial to remember that parasites like fleas and ticks are also out on the same adventure.

So here are some tips to have a ‘Pawsome Summer’ with your furry friend:

🐾 Keep up to date on your pets’ flea and tick medication. Yes, even for indoor cats, it is a good idea, as fleas can travel with you indoors. You can book an appointment with our friends at Tartan Tails Veterinary Hospital to discuss the best options for your pet.

🐾 Consistently check your pet for fleas and ticks, even after a five-minute walk around the neighbourhood.

🐾 If you find a tick on your pet, learn how to safely remove it: don’t use your fingers, instead use a tick twister. Don’t twist the tick, but try to gently but firmly pull the tick out. Make sure the tick is still intact. If not, contact your vet immediately.

🐾 It’s always recommended to check with your vet if you’re unsure of how to remove a tick or for a follow-up to make sure your pet is safe and healthy.

🐾 Keep an eye out on the area for any rashes and for unusual symptoms in your pet, such as fever, loss of appetite, swollen or painful joints, etc.

At the end of May, RVT Michelle Doane from Tartan Tails Vet chatted on CTV Morning Atlantic about how to protect your pet from ticks. Find the link at www.novascotiaspca.ca/in-the-news.
