This sweet dog is exactly that...sweet and almost perfect! I met him this evening for the first time, and he warmed up to me within minutes. Even snuggled his nose in for attention. Then, quickly just lay down on his bed! No big deal!
This guy is crate trained. He relaxes well in his crate when home alone. He easily settles around the house when everyone is just chilling at home with him. He can watch the geese, the deer and even a chipmunk walking along the deck close by, without chasing or barking. He is often off leash and stays with his family, easily walking along with them, or settling close by. When on his leash and harness, he walks quite well!
BUT... he needs the right home environment, as well as a breed knowledgeable guardian, who not only knows, but is experienced with training through the 'quirks' of either the Bernese AND the Great Pyrenees breeds.
He is quite shy when meeting new people, and will often bark & stay away. He is frightened when people approach him too quickly or directly. He is comfy to slowly approach on his own to investigate new people with a sniff, but is quick to move away again when some people make a move to pet him. It takes some time when everyone first arrives, but he can eventually settle. Even though he seems to have relaxed, he can be startled again when folks move around too much or too quickly and may go back to barking.
He's not a big fan of the vet visit and had 'air snapped' once when approached in that situation. Nothing some confidence building and temporary muzzle conditioning couldn't resolve.
He has met children, and in fact an 8 year old is one of his favorite people. But, he can be unsettled when around lots of busy, squealing kids. So, while he learns, a home with adults is best to allow him an opportunity to build confidence and learn more about these little beings.
He lives with a senior dog at the moment. And has met other family dogs. But, he has been 'selective' with other dogs, and can 'go in hot', often barking and charging in, which can get him into trouble. He has been known to soemtimes growl against another dog over a bone or toy. No resource guarding against his humans. He can be pushy for attention when other dogs are getting the attention of his humans. He had met a family cat as a young puppy, but does not live with cats at present.
A home where he is on his own to allow him time to slowly adjust his social skills and learn to share would best.
He is most comfy left in his crate when home alone, as he can put his anxious energy into finding trouble, like chewing up the remote control!
A sensitive guy, this dog needs someone who is experienced in both modern training techniques and knows how to build the confidence & resilience of a young dog who is worried or unsettled in some social situations. A couple on their own, a single person looking for company and a companion, someone on a farm with other similar breeds, someone preferably living in a rural setting with space and who loves outdoor activities would all be ideal possibilities for this guy.
