Thinking of icing cookies today? I wouldn't if I were you! At least not royal icing and prob not with butter cream either. Snow comes with lower humidity levels and lower humidity means dry air and the top layer of your icing dries too fast but the icing underneath stays wet then expands and cracks the surface of your icing. Trust me! After icing hundreds, maybe close to a thousand cookies in all BC weather I can tell you that this will happen. Unless you have a climate controlled kitchen? Just because it's warm in the house doesn't mean humidity levels are higher.
The humidity in my kitchen is usually 55% to 65% and sometimes 70% in the Spring.
Absolutely HAVE to ice cookies today? Lock yourself in a room that is room temperature, doors and curtains closed and turn on a humidifier. Make sure the room is at 55% MINIMUM. 60% to 65% is perfect. Over that is too much and you will saturate your cookies. I used to have hot water in my kitchen sink, water boiling on my stove, hot water in my bath tub and fans blowing when I had a deadline. Have a fan blowing on them for 24 hours straight and DO NOT PACKAGE THEM until they have been dry a full 24 hours.
The snow today reminded me of the stress I have experienced over the years with these cookies and thought I would share and please feel free to share this too to help others avoid tears, stress and ruined cookies!

Happy Howlidays everyone! I hope all the pups enjoyed their Christmas cookies? I would love to see photos and videos if anyone has any to share? There was a woman at the Arch Bishop Carney Craft Fair who bought cookies for her rats: I am wondering if the ratties enjoyed them too?!

I had such a fun time at the Light up Osprey Village event this evening! So many super polite and very sweet dogs to test my cookies on! It seemed like a great night for the kids as well! Thank you those who showed up and helped to support their local businesses and artisans!

Lots going on today at the Arch Bishop Carnie Craft Fair! It was super busy until about lunch time. It was lovely to have customers from last year come by this year to tell me their dogs enjoyed last year's cookies! Makes me a bit like Santa Paws! It was nice to see so many familiar faces and I hope to see more tomorrow!
