Just a reminder that chickens love pumpkins! If you want to do something good with your pumpkin please cut it up and toss it to our chickens! Please remove any candles or non edible decorations before you throw them over.

Railside Market Garden has lots of fresh spray free Russian Red Garlic ready for your cooking, canning or planting projects! We have about 500lbs ready to go so don’t be shy about ordering large quantities.

1 - 4 lbs = $10 per lb
5 - 9 lbs = $9 per lb
10-19 lbs = $8 per lb

We also have lots of seconds or “seed” quality that I’m happy to sell at a discount. Just send me a message and we can discuss.

Well it’s been a while since our last post. It’s been a busy summer of w**ding, harvesting and cleaning our Red Russian Garlic in preparation for the Grindrod Garlic Festival this coming Sunday! We will be there with hundreds of pounds of beautiful, spray free garlic. We are looking forward to being at a market again for the first time in a few years and hope to see some of you there.

But don’t worry, if you can’t make it we will also have lots of garlic for sale at our store or by special order. We will be posting our prices when get back from the festival. If you can’t wait till then just let us know if you are interested and we will work out a deal.

NEW LOW PRICE!

Fresh Garlic Scapes!
$1 per pound first 5 pounds
$0.50 for every extra pound

Garlic scapes are the flower stem of the Garlic plant. They have a consistency similar to asparagus or a green been, but taste like garlic!

Use them wherever and whenever you want garlic with a green twist! Eat them cooked or uncooked. Awesome in stir-fry’s, eggs, or salads. Also super yummy when made into pickles or pesto! If you aren’t sure how to use them, just freeze them in small batches and pull them out to cook when you feel inspired and want some fresh green garlic in your meal.

Please message us with an order and we will arrange a time for you to pick them up.

But get them soon, we are picking and selling this week and they won’t last long.

PS, we don’t use any herbicides or pesticides on our farm… if you look closely in this photo you will see the w**ds!

End of April progress report. Most of the garlic is looking great! And even more exciting is that we are staying on top of the w**ds. The next event will be the growth of the scapes. Scapes are actually the flower stem of the garlic. But they are so much more than a stem, they are a delicious and beautiful green edible part of the garlic plant. We will be harvesting them in late May early June and seeking them by the pound. Make sure to get some and put them in the freezer and you will love them in your omelette’s, stirfries, and pretty much everything. In fact you might like them more than the garlic itself and you will definitely be sad when you use the last of them. We will let you know when they are ready.

What a difference a week or two makes! The irrigation is on and providing the garlic, and the w**ds 🥺, about 1” of water per week. Most of the garlic has sprouted and now has a good 2 to 3 inches of leaves growing out the top. We have already w**ded this block twice and there are 7 others just like it that are also needing w**ding almost every day 😭. Since we don’t use any chemicals, the plan is to w**d each block at least once per week from now until mid July. I shouldn’t complain too much, it has been amazing to get outside everyday and listen to the birds and the frogs and other animals while getting a bit of fresh spring air and exercise.

I spy with my little eye something that is 🌱! Here comes the 🧄! This year Railside is growing approximately 20,000 heads of amazing Russian Red Garlic! This is the earliest I have seen our garlic come out of hibernation, so hopefully it is a sign of good things to come. (It also means the w**ding starts now 🥺, and garlic needs lots of w**ding 😭). We will be selling the garlic at our store in July/August and maybe at a festival or two.

Well, it’s that time of the year again, the chickens are going on their winter egg strike. We will be closed until further notice due to no eggs. We will post on our page when we have eggs available for sale again. 🐓🥚🥶

Our son’s volleyball team is doing a bottle drive this coming Saturday, January 13th.
If you have any bottles laying around that you are happy to part with, please bring them to the store on Friday or Saturday when you are picking up your eggs.

We will be open tomorrow at 11 am until we run out of eggs or 1 pm, whichever comes first. We will then be closed until we re-open in the new year, Friday, January 5th at 2:30 pm.

Hi everyone, please feel free to bring your pumpkins to our farm and throw them over the fence for the chickens. If possible please break them up a little before you toss them in so that it’s easier for the chickens to get at.

Also please remove everything from the pumpkin that’s not pumpkin before you leave home. We don’t want the chickens eating candles, plastic decorations or other foreign, non biodegradable items. Please don’t bring any pumpkins that have been painted or decorated with glitter etc.

Just 100% natural pumpkin only, please and thankyou!

Railside had to say goodbye to the best LGD we have had the experience of owning. Samson was a tireless protector of the chickens we have. He would watch the skies and the fence line for predators. He did battle with Skunks and Owls and Rats and Coyotes and never lost a single match. We have not lost a single chicken to a predator while he has been with us. He worked in Heat and Rain and the Brutal cold. He never asked for more than a belly rub and one good meal per day. He loved his family and pretty much no one else. (Sorry to those who he scared at the fence line.)

Last night we noticed he was not eating and breathing poorly and had a lump under his jaw. The vet confirmed he had late stage lymphoma. Most of us were able to say our goodbyes this morning and a few of us were with him as he peacefully passed.

RIP Sammy. We will miss you terribly.
