YEP!!! Rayne is definitely putting us through the ropes at the moment. I may know and understand how to address his Adolescent behaviors and stages... but that doesn't mean we don't still need to go through it. Patience and Consistency. Easier some days then others.

Accurate.

Spring is coming...

A wonderful time of year to gear down and work with our dogs.... working with and being present with our dogs should be a daily occurrence. Our lives are busy and full of distractions and we all get side tracked and off course sometimes. I know I do! Setting aside the time to be with our dogs and give them quality time, and quality presence. Is such a "Gift" to us and our them.

My Goal when I work with clients and their dogs is to 1st understand the dogs to the best of my ability and 2nd. To begin with training that incorporates "Engagement and Connection". Then we build onto that depending on yours and your dogs needs! I believe training is "TEAM WORK". & Nurturing our relationships with our dogs should always come 1st.

Such a great post!!!

Thankyou for writing and sharing this Good Guardianship

A big issue for many walking their dogs on leads (for any one of a number of reasons) can be uncontrolled loose dogs running up to their dogs. Three of the most common reasons are shown in the image - an older dog who may be hurt in an over-enthusiastic and excitable greeting, a dog recovering from illness/injury/surgery, and a dog who is scared - perhaps the victim of a previous dog attack.

There is a misconception that 'good' dogs will love all other dogs and, if in a public area, should be prepared to play and interact with any other dog in the area. The truth is that, just as we are, most dogs are at least a little selective in who they want to interact with. They will show this in their body language which - subtle as it may be to humans - a socially competent dog will be able to read and respect.

The problem is that these 'good' and 'friendly' dogs as their humans perceive them are generally not actually all that socially competent, and don't respect those subtle signals asking for space and to be left alone. They can keep pushing and pushing until the on lead dog (who is not able to avoid them because they are on lead and can't get away) feels they have no choice but to defend themselves. And then it's often the poor on-lead dog who is labelled as 'bad' when they were just trying to get out of the scary situation.

An off lead dog should not be allowed to approach unknown on-lead dogs. If you see your dog approaching an on-lead dog, call your dog back and keep them close by, either by calling them to heel or putting them on the lead. For the sake of everyone's enjoyment of the space you are in, keep your dog under control for the few minutes it takes to give the on-lead dog space, and then carry on.

If your dog cannot be called back from approaching an on-lead dog, they are not ready to be off-lead in a public place. Use a longline while working on strengthening their recall around distractions - for their own safety, as well as that of the other dogs around.

I'm home from work... planning on running with both my dogs... they had a ton of energy when I first got home... my energy is now crashing... and here is my dogs asleep... 🐕 😴.

I'm still going to push myself to run them... it's just ironic that when I am able to run them they go and fall asleep 😴.

It's a fun playdate for these two good friends!

Lots of running wrestling and chasing... and practicing recall and calm, which is beneficial to both puppies...

Couldn't agree with this more!!!!

If your dog isn't cut out for therapy, service work, a particular dog sport etc... don't force them to fit your desires! Respect and love the dog you have ❤️

Far too often I see so called Therapy Dogs working and not enjoying it at all. If they are sleeping or shut down and can’t wait to leave, it’s not their gig and not in their best interest to force them to be a Therapy Dog.

People want their dog to be therapy dogs for good reasons but are often unaware of their dogs capacity for being a good therapy dog. Overlooking this important communication from your dog is doing a disservice to your dog.

Signs of disinterest include: sleeping, tongue flick, panting, looking away, yawning, whale eye, looking at you, not the person they are there for, no wagging tail, tucked tail, etc.

Check your ego and see who you are doing this for; the person needing therapy from a dog, your dog or you. If it’s the latter two… STOP. Listen to your dog, be kind and don’t ask your dog to do this for you.

Raynes Recall Tip

Hey, I'm Rayne...

You have probably heard about me. My people can't stop talking about me. I'm a little bit famous around here... probably because I'm so darn cute and so darn sweet... maybe we will keep some of my less desirable traits quiet 🤫...

Anyways I thought I would tell you what Terrylynn and I have been working on. I have a bit of an independent streak, and although this is something my family loves about me, they also want to keep me safe! So we have been whistle training. Boy, do I ever love the whistle!

Us K9's love and respond well to Whistles! But you still need to teach us what each sequence means. Three quick whistles are my cue to return to my family. Why does this work? Partly because it is a sharp sound that snaps my attention back to them, partly because it is usually simply a request to check in, and I can then go back to being a crazy puppy....and playing with my friends and family.
