SHAKEDOWN FOR BITING.

in the shakedown the dog is sitting, anchored in place with tension on the training collar. When you have seated the dog, and are sure it will not move, wheel around in front of it and kneel down. Grasp the scruff of the dog's neck with both hands and lift it right off its front feet into the air. Look directly into the dog's face, and shake the dog back and forth in quick, firm motions, gradually lowering the dog. Scold the dog while you look at it, and keep it elevated a good thirty seconds. It may be difficult to raise some larger breeds, in which case you will have to sacrifice this part of the procedure. Most dogs, however, can be lifted up off their front feet with a little effort.

After discipline in this fashion, the dog will be shaken up mentally and physically. Eye contact is essential. When you grasp the dog under its chin, make sure that you have one or both thumbs looped under the training collar, to stop the dog from breaking away. With your fingers, grab hold of quite a bit of neck scruff, and hold it firmly. After the shakedown, ignore the dog 10 min, he/she will try to get back in good graces....pay no heed. Then accept the dog back in your pack.

For young puppies amend this method somewhat. First, cut down on the intensity and duration of your correction. A young pup should be disciplined by simply grabbing with one hand the scruff of the neck and giving it a good shake. This method approximates the technique a mother of a litter uses to keep order in the litter, to stop fighting between litter members, or to help wean her pups away from her to solid food. Discipline methods that reflect instinctual canine behavior will communicate displeasure in ways a dog can understand. Other corrections like throwing or hitting the dog with objects, spanking with newspapers, or simple pleading only serve human, not canine, ends, and do not communicate displeasure clearly to the dog. Once again, do not do this while angery, do not go light, or you will be involved in a dog fight. I never do this to an unstable dog, this is my cure for biteing if your other attempts fail. I will remind you , praise or punishment with seconds of event.

Face-licking dogs are not always displaying affection.
At a family gathering last night, the household's very cute 40 lb very-mixed neutered male dog, Gomer, joined everyone on the family room couch and vigorously licked the face of an adult guest. While licking he wiggled and climbed frenetically onto her as other family members smiled and looked on. At one point, when she had had enough, she moved him back using her arm, and he growled. As it turned out, the guest was sitting on Gomer's favorite spot on the couch. Is that relevant? Possibly, but not necessarily, since she was already "in place" when he jumped up.
The crossover from licking/wiggling to growling seemed surprising, but was it really unexpected? No - because both were manifestations of anxiety and stress.
Why do dogs lick? Developmentally, puppies lick the faces of adult social group members to signal submissiveness in order to solicit caregiving (and food regurgitation). Our own dogs may lick our faces because they’ve learned that it delights us (okay, SOME of us) and the licking is happily reinforced.
But keep in mind that licking might also be one of the many ways that dogs "displace," or indirectly express, discomfort, anxiety or ambivalence. Remember the “Kiss to Dismiss” term coined by Jennifer Dawson Shryock (see http://familypaws(dot)com/2014/my-dog-loves-my-baby-he-always-licks-him/ replacing the (dot) with a dot).
Rather than showing 'love', Gomer was exhibiting stress.
There were 26 visitors milling, talking, hugging, eating and drinking in his house. He had already greeted and played and carried balls to anyone willing to give them a toss. The couch presented his first opportunity to climb onto and reach a face, and his exuberance was over the top. At that point he should have been redirected with a toy (which, to him, trumps food), lured off the couch without hands (to avoid defensive behavior), and taken upstairs to his safe haven. Instead, his frantic behavior escalated so that when he was physically obstructed, growling was immediate. All he had to do was step over the line in his amygdala. (This is also, by the way, the context that triggers "hu***ng" of guests.) Gentle redirection without pushing would have been very helpful.
Don't assume that frantic licking and jumping indicate love; even with friendly dogs, they might mean just the opposite.

a sensitive or fearful dog’s ambivalence about being touched by people she doesn’t really know. For more dogs than you might think, petting is not a positive experience. For many it is, of course, but this is largely a learned behavior and unique to human-dog interactions. Dogs don’t pet each other, after all (nor do they rub each other’s bellies).
A hand reaching over the dog’s head might elicit lowering of the head, blinking and lip-licking behavior. Some dogs – especially if they’re taken by surprise -- will overtly avoid the hand until they seem to realize it’s a benign gesture. Stand back and watch a training class when the instructor uses only petting and praise as positive reinforcement, and the chances are excellent that you’ll see some of the dogs averting their heads as the hand reaches out. They might be anticipating something truly good (and preferred) like food, or they might even be fearful.
It’s one thing to note the body language of our own dogs being stroked by family members, but even more important when someone else reaches to pet them. This is a red-flag interaction for some dogs. Unfortunately, human beings seem to believe that touch is the preferred greeting and the goal of any human-dog communication. But, especially with unfamiliar people, it is not.
If you have friends and family gathering together and choose to have your sensitive dog in the mix, try asking everyone to hold off on touching her. When everyone is settled she might seek contact. But even then, a happy dog might prefer just lying nearby without having to worry about unsolicited touch.
