Heading to the lake this long weekend?

Blue-green algae advisories have been issued for numerous water bodies so far this summer, with more expected as temperatures rise. All animals including dogs, cats, livestock, and humans are susceptible to the toxins produced by blue-green algae.

Here are some tips to follow to protect animals:

- Don’t allow pets to swim or wade in water where blue-green algae is present. If you aren’t sure - keep them out!
- Don’t let pets drink from the lake or lick algae off fur or paws
- Avoid feeding pets fish caught from lakes under blue-green algae advisories
- If you suspect your animal was exposed to algae blooms or shows symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately

Thought l would share for those travelling to Long Point beach 😁 it’s not far from home. Stay protected.
5 confirmed cases, more waiting on test result.
Ticks can be found in short grass just as much as long grasses.

5 cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) have been reported in dogs who have visited the Long Point area in the last month.

This is a relatively new-to-Canada tick borne disease, transmitted by the American dog tick/wood tick and the Brown dog tick. These ticks transmit the infectious bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. Humans can also be infected by this bacteria.

The most common symptoms of RMSF are vague, but they include fever, lethargy, poor appetite, stiffness/lameness. More extreme symptoms may also include gastrointestinal signs and focal hemorrhages/petechia.

If you suspect your pet may have RMSF, please contact the clinic immediately.

Here is a visual of our short snouted, squishy faced dogs and why walking them and playing with them in this heat is dangerous!! Even just a short walk can cause so much stress for them 🥺

𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪

When you read or hear about the bulldog-type, short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds having more trouble with the heat, you may wonder why. On a good day, with moderate temperatures, they have a much more difficult time moving air to their lungs because of their anatomy.
This picture shows the back of the mouth of a long-nosed dog on the left (a collie-retriever cross) and a short-nosed dog on the right (a pug). You can see that this area is compressed and limited in the pug. Pugs, Bulldogs (all types), Bostons, Boxers, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Pekingese, etc. all have this anatomy. The space is even more limited when they are overweight or obese. When it is hot, dogs can only cool themselves by panting. Excessive panting leads to swelling in the back of the mouth and throat. This swelling makes it even more difficult for the brachycephalic breeds to breathe, and they can suffocate.
In fact, any dog can succumb to heat stroke or compromised breathing, so PLEASE DO NOT exercise or leave dogs outside in the sun or in cars when it is hot. They trust us to make good choices and take care of them!

We trying to raise money to help pay for Kingston’s mass removal surgery 🫣 Kingston is our goofy senior boy, he’ll be 9yrs old in August and he still thinks he’s 2yrs old 🫣

We adopted him from a rescue in Montreal when he was just a 1yr old pup. My husband Mike fell in love with his photo on the rescue page.
By the time we contacted the rescue he was already adopted 😞 a month later the rescue contacted us saying he was returned due to the adopter being scared of him 😳 we where in the car the next morning on our way!!

Kingston has been an amazing boy, he is super goofy, smart and very sweet natured, he’s extremely obedient, friendly to all people and dogs and quite content with anything we like to do 🥰 he loves to eat spicy sky raisins 🐝 and LOVES his warm baths! He will whine until he gets his Blankey and a spot on the couch, he’s quite the cuddle bug/lap dog for 94lbs 🙄

The mass has always been small and a non issue until recently, in a short period of time it has grown, the skin is tight and it bleeds from the pressure. Not much room as it’s tight on top of his toes 🥺

It doesn’t seem to hurt him, but lm sure it’s super annoying. It does make some of the things he loves to do challenging 😥 Running, playing, wrestling with his dad, playing with his younger siblings and wearing his winter boots.

His surgery is scheduled for Aug 12th the day after his birthday 🎉
