As many of you know I volunteer as a trainer for Kamloops Ruff Start Rescue Society. I want to give you an idea about how a good rescue organization works.

A little ten year old dog came into the rescue just over a month ago. The sweetest boy..it was found that he was incontinent and so off to the vets he went for a suspected UTI, the vet could not find any evidence of this, so thought perhaps it was neurological. He also had a painful eye condition so off he went to the Okanagan Eye Centre..while that was being sorted out they decided as he couldn’t control his bladder he had to wear diapers inside the home. All the while his fosters showered him with love and cuddles. He also had a crooked leg which would cause him to fall occasionally.
One day he stopped eating, had severe diarrhea, so was rushed to the emergency clinic. After further testing he was found to have a grade four heart mumer, fused discs in his spine that the vets thought were responsible for his leg and incontinence issues.
The Ruff Start team had a meeting and decided the kindest gift they could give this little dog was to let him go in the arms of the two volunteers that rushed him into the ER.
This rescue organization rarely has to face decisions like that, thankfully..but it goes to show just how much time, effort, money and love these volunteers put into Ruff Start.
They hold many fundraisers to help cover all the expenses. A lot of times dog and puppies come to them and they all need spaying or neutering, plus shots. For those of you that have dogs you know how just that one thing costs so much. Adoption fees rarely cover expenses of one dog.
If you want to support them in any tiny way, fosters they always need but donations help too. May be if you are in the Kamloops area, hold an event, next time you go to a pet store like Pet Valu or Bosleys, pick up an extra bag of dog food..all these things help. Sending monetary donations in any small way is extremely helpful for all the vet bills, like the several thousands for the little dog described above.
Lastly, give your dog an extra hug today, for all the dogs that suffer abuse, fall on hard times, have not had good starts in life and being rescued gave them a second chance!

Photo, this is Mia, (the dog not the cat), she was left on the street with her sister and taken in by the pound who contacted Ruff Start. My son adopted her, actually he fostered her first and fell in love with her.. she has no background, nobody knows what her life was like except she and her sister were abandoned..

After careful consideration I have decided to retire from in person or online training. I have loved my 40 plus years of helping people help their dogs. It has been a privilege and an honour to be able to do this. I have met so many hundreds, perhaps thousands of people and their dogs..but now it is time to hand the reins over to all the up and coming younger trainers that believe in relationship training and most of all, believe in the welfare both physically and emotionally of all our beloved canines friends and family.

I will still volunteer my time with rescues, at the moment it is Kamloops Ruff Start Rescue Society, I also am a member of Professional Animal Care and Training Association of BC and will continue in any small way I can. I love the BC SPCA and support locally here in Chilliwack when I can.

I have gone back to work in the human medical field, albiet as a receptionist three days a week. I love my job but I also need work/life balance. I am no spring chicken anymore, lol.

I will continue to keep this page open so I can share with you from time to time. I might also take it in a slightly different direction by sharing past memories and stories of not only my dogs but dogs I have worked with and the impact they have had on my own life, and there are many...

Thank you again to all my supporters, thank you for reading my page and hopefully enjoying the articles and videos and photos..it has been my absolute pleasure to engage with all of you far and wide...

Our Story

Cam K9 Services started back in 2008, named after one of the greatest dogs I ever had the pleasure and honour to have in my life. He taught me so much in his 16 years on this earth. Previously to Cam, I had been working with dogs for over 35 years, training, competing in Flyball, Agility, Obedience, Herding, dabbled in some Musical Freestyle, really as much “dog joy” as I could. My dog training style has evolved over the years from old school “check chain” training to more positive and “relationship based” training. We hope to add in Herding Instinct Training as well by the summer of 2021. Kathy and I still do in home training and consults and we now have two Kamloops trainers for our ever growing clientele list. Plus when required I can help with rehab of post op cruciates and a variety of other orthopedic surgeries. I am a Certified Canine Hydrotherapist and have been doing this for 10 years now. I have owned 2 pools and when Kamloops had their own pool, I worked in there as well. I am also trainer for Xtreme Air Dock Diving for BC. We do not get a lot of opportunity for this in Kamloops but I am willing to travel to give workshops to those that have pools at least 33 feet long, but better yet the standard 40 foot pools. Our location is now in beautiful Louis Creek. We have now opened up our very exclusive and luxurious K9 B & B to take in guest for boarding. We are unlike any other boarding facility in the Kamloops area and we are very proud to offer this service here.
