This afternoon our vets office brought this beautiful bouquet and card to our home. Infact the vet tech that assisted our vet brought them all the way up the mountain. Very unexpected but thoughtful..again I cannot thank them enough for the care they have shown us but most of all Shae. Vedder Mountain Veterinary Clinic

Do dogs grieve ?
Yesterday Shae passed, Jack our Golden was very close to Shae, two old boys together for the past 13 years. Jack was present at Shae’s passing to help him deal with the loss. Today, Jack has been very quiet, sleeping a lot. He perked up a bit on his hike today but otherwise he has looked quite depressed.
Jack has hardly interacted with us, he has stayed close but mostly just lying where we are..
Over time I hope it gets easier for him because he cannot talk it out..

I changed my cover photo to Shae ( my border collie) from when he was a puppy, 15.5 years ago. On Thursday my vet is coming to my home to help Shae's tired old body to cross the Rainbow Bridge. It is a very sad time, in one way, but having had the pleasure and good fortune to have this boy for 15 years of my life, who could ask for more..
He has been a very laid back dog as Border Collies go, yes he has dabbled in sheep..but he would rather stop and smell the daisies along the way..lol As his "finisher" Martha McCardy said way back when, he always has his head in the clouds and his nose in the flowers..but he did finish and he loved his job with us.
He will be missed, but we have many many memories of this boy, many funny memories, like one Christmas when he went for a walk by the Englishman River and forest, he left my husband and wouldn't recall. When he eventually found him, he was swimming with the fish in the Fish Hatchery!! Many people watching him were laughing.
As dogs never are long on this earth we have to cherish each moment we have..we forget that sometimes I think. Hug your dog today!

Loose lead isnt natural. It’s a skill that has to be learnt. Biomechanically, dogs are built to move faster than us. Dogs choose to shift to a natural trot and on average walk at 2.5 - 4 mph (Hildebrand, 1966) where us naked monkeys on the otherhand average 2-3 mph walking (Kirtley, 2006). Do you know what 2.5 feels like? You should!

Because the mismatch alone creates tension — physically with the lead and emotionally in the relationship. Infact Dogs Trust found 30% of owners considered it a reason to rehome.

Now add in breed differences with research by Fischer & Lilje (2011) suggesting that Different breeds have different locomotive profiles based on original function. Malinois and Vizslas who are bred to move, track, cover ground; hearding breed like kelpies and collies who are bred to arc out infront; scent hounds like Beagles and Bloodhounds - designed to follow their noses with purpose, drive and speed; and of course breeds like Huskies who are literally bred and built to pull - it’s in the actual job description.

Its not a suprise that Rooney & Cowan (2011) found Lead tension and restricted gait was specifically a negative welfare marker for working breeds.

So when we expect all dogs to plod beside us through a park at human pace, ignoring smells, distractions, and natural instinct…we’re arent asking for a behaviour: We’re asking for the dog to restrain their pace, suppress their instincts, and constantly self-regulate.

In my opinion loose lead is one of the three essential skills I believe every dog pro needs to understand in depth - gait, drive, motivation, mechanics, assessment, different technique and exercise, consequence gradients and all.

Because when you understand what you’re really asking for,
you stop calling it stubbornness
and start training it like the advanced skill it actually is. And this leads to way better pet dogs with way happier relationships. ###

Our Story

Cam K9 Services started back in 2008, named after one of the greatest dogs I ever had the pleasure and honour to have in my life. He taught me so much in his 16 years on this earth. Previously to Cam, I had been working with dogs for over 35 years, training, competing in Flyball, Agility, Obedience, Herding, dabbled in some Musical Freestyle, really as much “dog joy” as I could. My dog training style has evolved over the years from old school “check chain” training to more positive and “relationship based” training. We hope to add in Herding Instinct Training as well by the summer of 2021. Kathy and I still do in home training and consults and we now have two Kamloops trainers for our ever growing clientele list. Plus when required I can help with rehab of post op cruciates and a variety of other orthopedic surgeries. I am a Certified Canine Hydrotherapist and have been doing this for 10 years now. I have owned 2 pools and when Kamloops had their own pool, I worked in there as well. I am also trainer for Xtreme Air Dock Diving for BC. We do not get a lot of opportunity for this in Kamloops but I am willing to travel to give workshops to those that have pools at least 33 feet long, but better yet the standard 40 foot pools. Our location is now in beautiful Louis Creek. We have now opened up our very exclusive and luxurious K9 B & B to take in guest for boarding. We are unlike any other boarding facility in the Kamloops area and we are very proud to offer this service here.
