Chester Basin Animal Hospital

Chester Basin Animal Hospital A full service veterinary hospital that provides choice and individualized health care for your fami Titres can be an alternative to vaccinating.

Dental Service
Like humans, our pets need their teeth cleaned on a regular basis. But unlike humans, most pets don’t get their teeth cleaned every day. Even when no signs of tartar are visible, there is still a line of plaque and bacteria on and under the gums. This bacteria, if not properly maintained, will eventually affect your pet's organs causing them to become less functional. 80% of pets ov

er the age of 1 year show some sign of periodontal disease. This is why an annual cleaning is so important for the overall health of your pet. Also a regime of brushing your pet’s teeth with a combination of a special dental diet can help to improve your pet’s dental health. Our on-site dental facility includes: cleaning, polishing, extractions, and dental x-rays. Euthanasia
We understand that this is a very personal and emotional time for you and your pet. We try to think of euthanasia as the final act of love you can give your pet to end their suffering. After your pet is gone, we will discuss options with you which include taking your pet home for burial or leaving your pet with us to make arrangements for burial or cremation. Laboratory Services
Our in-house diagnostics offer blood, urine and f***l testing. Once your pet's blood has been collected, results can be obtained within 20 minutes. We also offer several tests which are referred out, including titre testing, which is a blood test that measures the level of antibodies in your dogs system against Parvo and Distemper viruses. Laser Therapy
K-laser is a therapy that penetrates deep in to the tissue promoting rapid healing. It increases circulation providing oxygen and nutrients to damaged areas, which reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain. Laser therapy is another alternative to pain management for you and your pets. Pet Supplies
Quality veterinary diets, prescription diets, home cooked recipes and nutritional supplements are offered at the hospital as well as nutritional consultations. Our retail area offers a variety of shampoos, flea products, toys, leashes and other pet goodies. Surgery
We offer a wide range of reproductive, soft tissue, dental and minor orthopedic surgeries using anesthesia tailored to meet your individual pet’s needs. Our surgical facility meets the standards set by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. We also refer specialty surgeries to board certified surgeons in Halifax, Moncton and the Atlantic Veterinary College in PEI. Radiology
With our state of the art digital radiology unit, we can obtain x-ray images in minutes allowing for rapid assessment and diagnosis which is especially important in emergent situations.

Did you know it's also cold and flu season for your dog? We are currently seeing a large spike in the number of "kennel cough" cases coming through our doors so thought this would be a good time to share a bit of a FAQ about this issue - and to help you decide if your furry friend may need to be seen by their veterinarian! The current outbreak does seem to be more aggressive than other strains we have seen recently, so keep a close eye on your 4 legged friends.

What is Kennel Cough?
Kennel Cough, or Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) is a syndrome that can be caused by a number of different viruses (mainly) or bacteria (rarely) that affects their breathing system. In mild cases it can present as a honking, hacking cough which often sounds like something is caught in their throat. They will also often cough up white phlegm. In more severe cases dogs can also have fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, nasal discharge, and sometimes progress to pneumonia which can be life threatening.

What about the vaccine?
We do offer a vaccine that is protective against certain pathogens that can cause kennel cough - but it doesn't protect against all of them. It's kind of like the flu shot for people - it won't stop your dog from getting CIRDC, but it will often result in them being less sick and getting over it without any medical care on their own. With the most recent outbreak we are seeing the vaccine does appear to be highly effective in making dogs far less sick than their friends who weren't vaccinated! This can sometimes mean a dog who only coughs for a day or two versus a dog who is coughing for 10-14 days!

How do I know when my pet needs to be seen?
As CIRDC is most often caused by a virus, there is no treatment prescribed to most mild cases so they often do not need to be seen by us - in fact we prefer they stay home to not infect anyone else! That said, if your dog is showing any nasal discharge, lethargy, fever, lack of appetite, or just isn't feeling themself then we recommend having them seen on an urgent (1-2 days) basis. If your dog is showing any signs of difficulty breathing then that is an emergency and they should be immediately taken to a 24 hour center with the ability to hospitalize them if necessary - like our friends at Coastal Care Veterinary Emergency! If you are at all in doubt, please call us and we can chat with you about what your best option is for having your concerns addressed.

How can I prevent my dog getting this?
CIRDC is hugely contagious and sometimes spreads despite our best efforts - our canine friends are not very good about coughing into masks! Keeping your dog away from other dogs and meeting areas is your best bet. Avoid dog parks, daycares, and other areas where dogs frequent. Ask your groomer about how they sanitize between patients to minimize the spread of disease. Even if you only walk your dog around the neighborhood there is frequently a "community rock" (you know the one, everyone has to stop and sniff and/or p*e on it!) where if one dog coughs on it, that's game over for all the other neighborhood dogs! Your dog may be more at risk if they are particularly young, old, or immunocompromised.

We hope this is informative on the realities of kennel cough right now! As always, please contact us if you have any questions or feel your pet needs to be seen!
