Pre-vet prep. little steps now, less stress later! 💛

Vet visits can be overwhelming for our dogs, especially when they involve handling sensitive areas or unfamiliar equipment.

Practicing things like ear and nose handling, as well as introducing a muzzle in a positive way, can help build confidence and make future vet visits a little easier. 🩺

✨ Keep sessions short and positive
✨ Go at your dog’s pace
✨ Pair handling with things your dog loves
✨ Build positive associations with a muzzle before you ever need one

The goal isn’t to get your dog to tolerate anything at all costs. It’s to help them feel comfortable, build trust, and learn that these experiences can be predictable and rewarding.

Start small, take your time, and celebrate the little wins. Your future self (and your vet team!) will thank you. 🐶

Shout out to AprilVets Chester and AprilVets Bayers Lake for always welcoming us for happy visits and going at Dougie’s pace. 💚

Franky’s the name, building focus and boosting confidence is the game! This little guy made lots of progress over just a few sessions together. Great work Team Franky!! 🎉

Working on a new skill with Dougie 👏

Teaching Dougie to heel on either side of me - and switch sides on cue.

A useful skill for walks, navigating tight spaces and a fun new way to build engagement on our walks.

Reminder: we’re not training military dogs over here, just having fun and training applicable life skills. Training should be fun for both you and your dog! 🤩

A proud trainer moment 🥹🐾

I’m so impressed with the progress Obi and his people have made together. This guy started out very shy and worried about the world around him, and today we followed his lead on a big neighbourhood sniffari. 💙

It has been a great reminder that working at the dog’s pace is key. There are no guarantees in dog training, and progress doesn’t always happen in a straight line, but when you build trust, give your dog the time they need, and keep showing up, those little steps can turn into some pretty big moments.

Trust the process. Celebrate the small wins. And let your dog tell you when they’re ready for the next step. 🐶🌿

Great work Team Obi!! 🎉

Practice recall when you don’t need it.

⭐️ Practice in low distraction environments
⭐️ Practice when your dog is still close by
⭐️ Practice when your dog is already on their way back to you

Future you (and your dog…and others on the trail) will thank you. 🙏

One of the most common pieces of advice I wish people would stop giving dog owners: “Take your dog’s food away so they learn to share.” "...learn who's boss."

Your dog doesn’t need to learn that humans can take their food. They need to learn that humans approaching their food is safe — and maybe even makes something good happen.

Adding food to the bowl as you walk by is a simple way to build that association from the start. 🐾

This is especially valuable to practice with puppies, but dogs of all ages can benefit from it. 🐶

If your dog is already showing significant resource guarding, please don’t try to work through it on your own. Reach out to a qualified, certified trainer or behaviour professional for guidance.

Save this post for the next time someone tells you to “take the bowl away.”
