I’ve been asked this question as well, and I think Bewitched Rattery answered it perfectly!

Why do I wait until 8 weeks or older to adopt out my babies?

Not all breeders will. Some will, some will home them younger.
Here is why I prefer to wait:

Baby rats typically begin to wean around three weeks old, when their eyes and ears open up, and they discover food and the world around them. As they begin to eat more solid food, they nurse from their mother less, however they're not typically fully weaned until about four to five weeks old.

It is important to their emotional and physical development to allow them to nurse until weaning takes place. This allows them to develop a stronger immune system, contributing to their overall health and well-being. Being with their mother longer also helps them develop crucial social skills and behaviours that they will need to effectively become part of their future mischief and get along with other rats. Early separation from their mother and litter mates can cause stress and even health issues, and should, in my opinion, be avoided. Rats should be encouraged to thrive, not just exist, and allowing them to wean properly contributes to this.

Early separation can lead to shyness or even aggression, as it limits their ability to learn social skills at a crucial time in their development. They need this time to learn to interact with other rats and know their place in the social hierarchy that all rat mischiefs employ. Allowing them to stay with their litter mates until 8 weeks also tends to reduce stress when rehoming, therefore it is of utmost importance when adopting young rats that they be homed in pairs or trios, as they MUST have same-aged company for their emotional well-being and social and behavioural development.

I believe it is of great importance to give young rats the best start in life that I can.
Therefore, I do not rehome any rats prior to 8 weeks of age, and sometimes older.

The Sweet Tooth babies are 2.5 weeks old and super active!

We lost PPUP Gummybear, but everyone else is looking great! They are exploring their environment, playing with each other, and even starting to try new foods!

PPUP Butterscotch and PPUP Caramel are trying to sleep, meanwhile PPUP Bubblegum is trying to eat his brothers tail 😂

The babies turned 1 week old on Sunday!

Unfortunately, we lost 2 of the babies, but the rest are looking great!

Meet Jellybean, Gummybear, Bubblegum, Licorice, Butterscotch, Caramel, and the only girl, Taffy!

They are all looking beautiful and healthy!

A big thank you to Taylor at Umbrella Rattery for these 4 beautiful rats I picked up on Saturday!!!

Three are females (UAR Heatwave, UAR Thunder and UAR Yeti) and one male (UAR Monsoon).

UAR Monsoon has made himself at home, wanting all of the attention and Heatwave is warming up to me too. UAR Yeti and UAR Thunder have been a bit more cautious, but we're working on it!

Fun Fact:
UAR Yeti is actually from the same 'Cryptids' litter as my other rat, UAR Nessie. She was the mother of my recent 'Gravity Falls' litter, PPUP Dipper and PPUP Mabel! The girls were very excited to see each other again!
The other three are from their 'Natural Disasters' litter.

I've been very happy with all of the rats I've gotten from Umbrella Rattery. They have great temperaments, health, and gorgeous colourings. Taylor has been a great person to work with aswell! Thank you so much!

UAR Nessie's babies are now 3 weeks old!

January 17th she surprised me with 2 beautiful babies, a boy and a girl 🩵🩷

Meet PPUP Dipper and PPUP Mabel! 💕

I had paired her up with Dax three weeks prior, but saw no growth from her, so I assumed she wasn't pregnant (I have a scale now so I know for sure next time lol).

Turns out it was a very small litter of 2!
This was UAR Nessie's first litter, and the smallest litter I have had to date!

The babies are developing amazing personalities.
PPUP Mabel is very curious and adventurous, while PPUP Dipper is a cuddle bug who loves pets and being held!
