🎖️ THE CASE FOR JUSTICE: PETITION E6661 🎖️
Military historian Dr. David O’Keefe put it perfectly when he said that “Jess not getting the VC is like the Hockey Hall of Fame not letting anyone in unless they are better than Gretzky.”
This powerful analogy captures exactly what’s wrong with Canada’s approach to the Victoria Cross. Just as Wayne Gretzky set the gold standard in hockey but wasn’t the ONLY player worthy of the Hall of Fame, the bar for the Victoria Cross shouldn’t be set so impossibly high that no Canadian has received it since WWII.
Private Jess Larochelle’s actions on October 14, 2006, in Pashmul, Afghanistan, embody everything the Victoria Cross represents:
✅ Severely wounded with broken vertebrae, detached retina, and blown eardrum
✅ Alone at a destroyed observation post under sustained enemy fire
✅ Continued fighting to protect wounded comrades on an undefended flank
✅ Changed the course of the battle and saved lives
✅ Demonstrated “the most conspicuous bravery” under fire
PETITION E6661, sponsored by Liberal MP Pauline Rochefort, calls for an Independent Military Honours Review Board to examine Afghanistan veterans’ cases. This isn’t about politics - it’s about recognizing extraordinary courage when we see it.

If we keep waiting for someone “better than Gretzky,” we’ll never honor the heroes who’ve already earned their place in history.
