Our new website is coming soon and I wanted to share this photo and a little story behind it.
Somewhere around the year 2000 I met a wonderful woman by the name of Jakky Foster who taught me how to knit. She bought me a set of circular knitting needles and a skein of cotton yarn because the first thing she was going to teach me how to make was that classic knitted washcloth. She first had me practice with some acrylic yarn from her stash, and once I had 4 inches or straight knitting with no dropped stiches or extra ones picked up, I was ready to learn the washcloth.
Learning to knit opened doors for me and gave me an escape from a life I desperately needed an escape from, only I didn't see it at the time, but Jakky did. I learned everything I could from her and picked up more techniques from books about knitting.
She had also given me a crochet hook because she liked using one to weave in the ends. One day I picked up the crochet hook and decided I was going to teach myself to crochet. I made meters and meters of chains before I finally figured out how to turn them and add rows. Once I figured that out I was unstoppable and experimented with various stitches and created my own patterns.
I have been knitting and crocheting on and off since then. Experimenting with various weights and textures of yarn, techniques, and tools, like a knitting board, circular loom, and knitting machine.
Now for the picture. I was given some yarn from a friend who was clearing out her stash and as I was sorting everything out I came across this skein. It didn't have a label on it but I instantly knew what it was and teared up. This is the yarn that Jakky gave me to start my journey so many years ago. A colorway that Bernat has discontinued and I hadn't seen it in years. I knew what I had to do, I knit a classic washcloth with it and unlike most of what I make which is sold or given as gifts, I kept this washcloth for myself. When I use it I think about this amazing woman who started it all and the love that she poured into me at a time when I needed it.
