Here are some dog tips that you may just need for the summer…
1️⃣ Walk during cooler hours
Try walking your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when surfaces are cooler. A quick test: place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5–7 seconds — if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.
2️⃣ Hydration is everything
Always bring water on walks and keep multiple fresh water bowls available at home. Some dogs won’t stop playing even when overheated, so regular water breaks are important even if they don’t seem thirsty.
3️⃣ Watch for overheating
Heavy panting, excessive drooling, bright red gums, vomiting, wobbling, or unusual lethargy can all signal overheating. Flat-faced breeds like bulldogs, pugs, and boxers are especially vulnerable. If symptoms appear, move your dog into shade or air conditioning immediately and contact a veterinarian.
4️⃣ Never leave dogs in cars
Even on a mild day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise dangerously fast. Cracking the windows is not enough. Heatstroke can happen within minutes.
5️⃣ Keep them cool
Cooling mats, frozen treats, shaded rest areas, kiddie pools, and damp towels can help dogs regulate body temperature. For longer outings, consider a cooling vest or portable water bottle designed for dogs.
