10/20/2016

We are reporting 4 new cases of raccoon strain rabies this week in 2 raccoons and 2 skunks. The positive locations are: 1 raccoon and 1 skunk from Hamilton, 1 raccoon from Halton, and 1 skunk from Niagara. We also received strain typing from CFIA of a Hamilton skunk that was previously tested and confirmed as rabies positive, as being infected with bat strain rabies, not raccoon strain as we presumed it would be. Because we will remove this from our total raccoon strain cases, this brings the total to 220 cases of raccoon strain rabies and we remain at 2 cases of fox strain rabies cases since December 2015.

CFIA completes strain typing typically 2 – 4 weeks following our submissions for virus testing. Due to the location of these submissions we presume positives to be raccoon strain until we hear differently.
