The death of an 11-year-old boy in Ontario, Canada, is pushing doctors to warn people about any contact with bats.

Bats usually spread rabies through a bite or scratch, but this case was different. Details published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal show the boy had no visible bite marks or scratches at all.

He woke up one night to find a bat sitting on his face, resting over his nose and mouth. The bat wasn't aggressive and left no wounds, so his family didn't seek any treatment.

It seemed like nothing more than a strange story he'd tell for years. Nineteen days later, he started vomiting and felt facial numbness and tingling, then developed a fever, confusion, hallucinations, and trouble swallowing.

Doctors diagnosed rabies quickly once the symptoms appeared, but by that point it was already too late to save him.

He became Ontario's first locally acquired rabies death since 1967, a case that shocked medical professionals.

Doctors now stress that anyone who thinks they've had direct contact with a bat shouldn't check themselves for puncture marks and assume they're fine. Seek medical attention right away and let health officials decide whether treatment is needed, since they know exactly what signs to look for.
