There is no “getting over” grief.

There is no finish line where you stop missing them, stop loving them, or finally leave them behind.

Grief stays with us because love stays with us.

Yes, grief can change with time. We can learn how to live alongside it. We can laugh again, experience joy again, love again, and build a life that holds so much more than our loss.

But that doesn’t mean grief disappears.

There may still be days, months or years later, when their absence feels impossibly heavy. A memory can still catch you off guard. An anniversary can still hurt. You can still desperately wish they were here.

That isn’t a failure to heal.

Because healing was never supposed to mean becoming unaffected by the loss of someone who mattered so deeply.

We don’t “move on” and leave them behind.

We move forward carrying the reality that they lived, that they died, that we miss them — and that we still love them.

Some days that feels beautiful.

And some days it still really hurts. 🤍

Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. 🌈

A day to remember the animals who changed our lives, and whose absence is still felt in all the little places they once filled.

Today, I’d love for us to remember them together.

Share their name in the comments. Share a photo of them if you’d like. Tell us something about them — a favourite memory, something silly they did, what you miss most, or simply how deeply they were loved.

Whether your loss was yesterday or many years ago, their life still matters. Their story still matters. And the love you shared still matters.

The Pet Loss Club also holds a virtual Candlelight Memorial each month, where we come together to honour the pets we love and remember.

If you’d like your beloved to be included in our next memorial, you can register for free through The Pet Loss Club app. 🕯️

But for today, this space is theirs.

Who are you remembering? ❤️‍🩹🌈

Sometimes, we grieve ourselves too.

We know we’re going to miss them. We expect to miss their presence, their routines, their little sounds, the way they filled our homes and our days.

But we don’t always expect to miss the version of ourselves that existed when they were here.

The person who cared for them.
Who planned their day around them.
Who talked to them without thinking twice.
Who knew exactly where they’d be sleeping at any given moment.
Who came home knowing they’d be there.

When they die, so much of our everyday life changes, and sometimes our sense of who we are changes with it.

If you feel a little lost without them, it doesn’t mean you’ve lost yourself forever.

You’re learning who you are while carrying a love that changed you.

And that takes time. 🤍

If you’re navigating life after pet loss and want a space with people who understand, you’re always welcome in The Pet Loss Club.

There are so many impossible decisions that can come with loving a pet at the end of their life.

Did I wait too long?
Was it too soon?
Should I have tried one more treatment?
Did I miss something?
Could I have done more?

Grief has a way of taking the decisions we made with love and asking us to examine them again and again.

But you were making those decisions while facing something you never wanted to face: the possibility of losing someone you love deeply.

You may wish things could have been different. You may still question yourself. You may carry guilt alongside your grief.

But none of that means you failed them.

You love them. You cared for them. And when you were asked to make impossible choices, that love was there too. 🤍

Follow The Pet Loss Club for gentle, research informed support as you navigate life after pet loss.

🌿 Monday Memorial 🌿

Today we remember Toky — a smart, funny little leader who held such a special place at the heart of the family. 🕊️

“My sweet Toky baby, you were my perfect little baby. I miss you so much. You were so funny and serious. A very smart baby and the leader of the family. You took my whole heart when you left. I love you and I miss you deeply. ❤️‍🩹”

— Remembered by Annie Perez 🤍

Sometimes it only takes a few words to show just how deeply a pet was loved. Toky was clearly such an important part of the family, and that love will always be carried forward.

If you’d like your pet to be honored in a future Monday Memorial, you can submit through The Pet Loss Club App — and those memorials will continue to be shared here on Instagram.

🕯️ Our next Candlelight Memorial is coming up.

On Sunday, September 6, we’ll gather again to remember the pets who have left such a lasting place in our lives.

For each pet included, I’ll light a candle, share their photo, say their name, and read the tribute written by the person who loves them.

It’s one of the most meaningful evenings we share as a community—a space to say their names, tell their stories, and honour the love that continues after loss. 🤍

If you would like your pet to be included, comment CANDLE below and I’ll send you the link to The Pet Loss Club app, where you can submit their name, photo, and tribute.

Submissions are completely free. 🤍

You’re also welcome to simply join us on Instagram Live and light a candle of your own.

Your bond with your pet doesn’t have to disappear when they die. 🤍

In grief research, the ways we maintain a connection after loss are often called continuing bonds.

And these bonds can look different for everyone.

Maybe it’s telling their stories.
Lighting a candle.
Keeping their collar somewhere special.
Returning to a place you shared.
Creating something in their memory.
Finding them in nature.
Or simply allowing yourself to remember them.

Research on continuing bonds after pet loss has found that memories, rituals, memorials, and even dreams can be meaningful ways people maintain connection and cope with grief.

But there is no “right” way to do this. What brings comfort to one person may not feel supportive to another — and that’s okay.

I created a new FREE Gentle Tool: Continuing the Bond — Gentle Ways to Stay Connected After Pet Loss, with simple ideas you can try if and when they feel right for you.

🤍 Comment BOND and I’ll send you the link to the free gentle tool.

You don’t have to force yourself to hold on.
And you don’t have to force yourself to let go.
Your bond gets to be yours.
