🐾 Why Play Matters 🐾
One of the biggest mistakes people make in training is assuming every dog is motivated by the same thing.
Some dogs will work endlessly for food. Some live for a toy. Others crave praise, interaction, or the opportunity to chase, tug or hunt. The key to successful training isn't forcing motivation. It's discovering what your dog truly values and using that to build engagement.
Play is one of the most powerful training tools we have. It allows us to create excitement, strengthen our relationship with our dogs, build confidence, develop focus, and make learning enjoyable. When a dog genuinely enjoys the training process, they become an active participant rather than simply following commands.
We find this especially important with bite sport dogs. Being highly motivated by external rewards and exciting environmental stimuli. Building value in yourself through play helps create a dog that wants to engage with you, even when there are more exciting things happening around them.
By learning what makes your dog tick, you can use that knowledge to create a dog that genuinely wants to work with you. Training should be more than obedience and compliance. It should be a conversation, a partnership, and most importantly, something both you and your dog enjoy.
