🐝🐾 BEE & WASP STINGS — WHEN IS IT AN EMERGENCY?

Summer means more time outside…and sometimes our curious dogs learn the hard way that buzzing insects are not snacks! 😬🐝

Most bee or wasp stings cause temporary pain and swelling, but some dogs can develop a serious allergic reaction, so knowing what to watch for is important.

🐝 COMMON SIGNS OF A STING:
• Sudden yelp or pain
• Licking or chewing at one area
• Redness or mild swelling
• Limping if stung on a paw
• Pawing at the face or mouth

🔎 IF YOU CAN SEE A BEE STINGER:
Carefully remove it as soon as you safely can. Wasps generally do not leave their stinger behind and may sting more than once.

🧊 FOR A MILD LOCAL REACTION:
A cool compress wrapped in a towel for 5–10 minutes at a time can help with discomfort and swelling. Keep your dog calm and monitor them closely.

🚨 WHEN IS IT AN EMERGENCY?

Seek veterinary care immediately if you notice:

⚠️ Significant or rapidly increasing facial/muzzle swelling
⚠️ Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing
⚠️ Excessive drooling or trouble swallowing
⚠️ Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
⚠️ Weakness, collapse or extreme lethargy
⚠️ Pale gums
⚠️ Hives or widespread swelling
⚠️ Multiple stings
⚠️ A sting inside the mouth or throat

🐶 FRENCHIE OWNERS — BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS!

Because French Bulldogs already have compact upper airways, swelling around the face, mouth or throat can become especially concerning. Don’t wait for breathing problems to become severe before seeking veterinary attention.

💊 WHAT ABOUT BENADRYL?
Don’t automatically reach into the medicine cabinet. Contact your veterinarian first for advice. The correct medication and dose depend on your dog, and some human combination products contain additional ingredients that may not be appropriate for pets.

🐝 Most stings are minor, but allergic reactions can progress quickly. When in doubt—especially with facial swelling or any change in breathing—call your veterinarian or nearest emergency hospital.

And maybe remind your Frenchie that spicy sky raisins are NOT treats. 😂🐝

Today, we’re celebrating all dogs and the incredible joy, loyalty and love they bring into our lives. From devoted companions and hardworking service dogs to playful puppies, beloved rescues and, of course, our adorable Frenchies—every dog deserves to be celebrated! ❤️🐾

Our dogs make us laugh, keep us company, comfort us on difficult days and remind us to enjoy the simple things in life: a walk, a cuddle, a sunny spot or a favourite treat. They truly make the world a better place. ☀️🐶

August may be winding down, but there are still plenty of reasons to celebrate our four-legged family members! 💕 Here are some of the pet-friendly holidays this month:

🦆🌊 DOGS AT LAKES & RIVERS — BEFORE THEY JUMP IN! 🐶💦

There’s nothing better than an Alberta summer day by the water with your dog! But lakes and rivers come with a few hazards that are easy to overlook.

🌊 WATCH THE CURRENT
Even strong swimmers can get into trouble in fast-moving rivers. Currents, sudden drop-offs and cold water can quickly exhaust a dog.

🐾 Keep your dog close to shore
🐾 Avoid fast-moving or unfamiliar water
🐾 Consider a properly fitted dog life jacket, especially when boating or paddleboarding
🐾 Never assume your dog is a strong swimmer just because they’re a dog!

Frenchies deserve some extra caution. Their heavy front ends, short legs and brachycephalic anatomy can make swimming more challenging, so a life jacket and close supervision are especially important.

🦆 DON’T FORGET ABOUT WILDLIFE
Ducks, geese and other animals can be VERY tempting to chase! Keep your dog under control around wildlife and don’t allow them to swim far from shore in pursuit of an animal.

💧 CHECK THE WATER QUALITY
Don’t assume that because water looks clean, it’s safe to drink.

Watch for:
• Blue-green algae/cyanobacteria advisories
• Stagnant or foul-smelling water
• Heavy algae growth
• Contaminated water or posted advisories

⚠️ Blue-green algae can produce toxins that may cause severe illness and can be fatal to dogs. If you suspect it, don’t let your dog swim in or drink the water.

🦠 Lakes, ponds and streams can also expose dogs to organisms such as Giardia, which can cause diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset.

💦 BRING FRESH WATER
One of the easiest ways to discourage your dog from drinking lake or river water is to bring plenty of clean drinking water and offer it regularly.

🚨 After swimming, watch for vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, excessive drooling, tremors, difficulty breathing or unusual behaviour. If your dog becomes suddenly ill after being in or drinking from a body of water, contact a veterinarian immediately and tell them where your dog was swimming.

A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping lake days fun, safe and memorable for everyone. 🏔️☀️🐾

👂💦 SWIMMING & EAR INFECTIONS — WHAT DOG OWNERS SHOULD KNOW! 🐶🏊‍♀️

Swimming is one of the best ways to cool off and have fun during the summer, but all that water can sometimes lead to an unwanted souvenir: an ear infection! 😬

When moisture becomes trapped inside the ear canal, it creates a warm, humid environment where yeast and bacteria can thrive. Dogs with allergies, chronic ear problems or ears that don’t dry easily may be especially prone to infections.

👂 SIGNS OF AN EAR INFECTION:

• Frequent head shaking
• Scratching or pawing at the ears
• Redness or swelling
• An unpleasant or ye**ty odour
• Brown, yellow or excessive discharge
• Sensitivity when the ear is touched
• Holding the head tilted to one side

💦 AFTER YOUR DOG GOES SWIMMING:

Gently dry the outer ear and ear opening with a soft towel.

If your veterinarian has recommended an ear-cleaning solution for your dog, using it after swimming may help remove moisture and debris.

🚫 Avoid sticking cotton swabs deep into the ear canal—they can push debris farther down and potentially cause injury.

⚠️ DON’T JUST KEEP CLEANING A PAINFUL EAR!

If your dog’s ear is very red, painful, smelly or producing discharge, it’s time for a veterinary exam. Different infections require different treatments, and your veterinarian may perform an ear cytology to determine whether yeast, bacteria or both are involved.

Also, sudden intense head shaking immediately after swimming or running through tall grass isn’t always an infection—a foreign body such as a grass awn could be hiding in the ear canal.

🐾 SUMMER TIP: Make the post-swim ear check part of your routine: towel off, check those ears, dry them and watch for changes.

Because nobody wants a fun lake day to turn into an itchy-ear week! 😂💦

☀️🧴 CAN DOGS GET SUNBURNED? YES! 🐶

We think about sunscreen for ourselves, but did you know dogs can get sunburned too?

Dogs with light-coloured coats, white fur, thin hair or exposed pink skin are especially vulnerable. Areas with less hair are usually at the greatest risk.

☀️ WATCH THESE SPOTS:
• Nose and muzzle
• Ear tips
• Belly and groin
• Inner thighs
• Areas with thin or missing hair
• Any recently shaved areas

🐾 WHAT DOES SUNBURN LOOK LIKE?

You might notice:
• Red or pink skin
• Skin that feels warm or tender
• Dryness or flaking
• Itching or licking
• Crusting or, with more severe burns, blistering

Repeated UV exposure can also contribute to chronic skin damage and certain types of skin cancer, so prevention matters.

🧴 WHAT ABOUT SUNSCREEN?

Use a pet-safe sunscreen recommended for dogs. Human sunscreen isn’t automatically safe—some products contain ingredients such as zinc oxide that can be harmful if your dog licks and ingests them.

🌳 HOW TO KEEP YOUR DOG SUN-SAFE:

☀️ Avoid prolonged direct sun, especially during the strongest part of the day
🌳 Provide plenty of shade
👕 Consider lightweight UV-protective dog clothing
🧴 Use veterinarian-approved pet sunscreen on vulnerable areas
💧 Always provide access to fresh water
🐶 Be especially cautious with light-coloured and thin-coated dogs

And remember: sunburn and overheating are two different problems. Our Frenchies can overheat very quickly because of their brachycephalic anatomy—even if their skin isn’t burning.

If you notice severe redness, blistering, significant pain or a skin lesion that isn’t healing, have your veterinarian take a look. ❤️

🐾🌲 WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS — COYOTES, PORCUPINES & SKUNKS! 🦨

Living in Alberta means we’re lucky to have beautiful parks, pathways and natural spaces right in our backyard—but it also means our dogs may cross paths with wildlife. Knowing what to do can help keep everyone safe. ❤️

🐺 COYOTES
Coyotes can be encountered on pathways, in parks and even in residential neighbourhoods.

• Keep your dog leashed and close if you spot one
• Don’t allow your dog to chase or approach it
• Give the coyote plenty of space and calmly leave the area
• Be extra cautious with small dogs, particularly around dawn and dusk
• Never leave food outside that could attract wildlife

🦔 PORCUPINES
Curious dogs sometimes learn this lesson the hard way! 😬 Quills commonly end up in the face, mouth and paws.

If your dog gets quilled:
❌ Don’t cut the quills
❌ Don’t try to remove a large number yourself
❌ Don’t let your dog rub or paw at them

Keep your dog as calm as possible and contact your veterinarian. Quills can break, migrate deeper into tissue and become much more difficult to remove.

🦨 SKUNKS
That smell is unforgettable! 🤢 But getting sprayed directly in the eyes can also cause significant irritation.

If your dog gets sprayed:
👀 Flush irritated eyes with plenty of lukewarm water or sterile saline
🚿 Keep your dog OUTSIDE until you’re ready to clean them—trust us on this one. 😂
📞 Contact your veterinarian if there is significant eye irritation, vomiting, weakness, breathing difficulty or other concerning symptoms.

🐾 THE BEST PROTECTION? A SOLID RECALL!
Practicing commands like “come,” “leave it” and “drop it” can make a huge difference when your dog notices wildlife before you do.

And even with great recall, keeping your dog leashed in areas where wildlife is common is one of the safest choices.

🌾🐾 FOXTAILS & GRASS AWNS — SMALL BUT MIGHTY TROUBLEMAKERS!

Summer adventures mean tall grass, fields, trails and off-leash fun—but they can also mean foxtails and grass awns getting somewhere they definitely don’t belong! 😬

These dry, barbed grass seeds are designed to move in one direction, which means once they work their way into your dog’s fur or skin, they may continue migrating deeper instead of simply falling out.

👂 EARS
Watch for sudden head shaking, scratching at one ear, holding the head tilted or pain when the ear is touched. A grass awn can travel deep into the ear canal and may require veterinary removal.

👃 NOSE
Sudden, violent or repeated sneezing after being outside can be a big clue. You may also notice pawing at the nose or nasal discharge, especially from one nostril.

🐾 PAWS
Grass awns love to hide between toes! Watch for licking, chewing, redness, swelling, limping or a small draining bump.

🐶 SKIN & COAT
They can become trapped in the coat and pe*****te the skin. Look for persistent licking, tenderness, swelling, redness or a wound that doesn’t seem to heal.

🌾 PREVENTION IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!

After walks through long or dry grass:
• Check between every toe and around the paw pads
• Look inside and around the ears
• Check the armpits, groin and belly
• Brush through longer coats
• Remove loose grass seeds before they have a chance to work into the skin

🚨 If your dog suddenly starts frantically sneezing, shaking their head, squinting, limping or obsessively licking one area after being outdoors, don’t ignore it. A deeply embedded grass awn may need to be located and removed by your veterinarian.

A quick 60-second body check after your summer adventures can save your pup a lot of discomfort—and potentially a trip to the emergency vet! 🌾🐶❤️

🍑🍉 SUMMER FRUITS: WHAT CAN YOUR DOG EAT? 🐶☀️

Nothing says summer like fresh fruit! And when those puppy-dog eyes are staring at you, it’s tempting to share. 😂 But not every fruit is safe for our dogs.

🍉 DOG-SAFE FRUITS
In small amounts, your pup can enjoy:

🍉 Watermelon — remove the rind and seeds
🫐 Blueberries — bite-sized and packed with antioxidants
🍓 Strawberries — remove the stems and cut into pieces
🍌 Bananas — higher in sugar, so keep portions small
🍎 Apples — remove the core and seeds
🍐 Pears — remove the core and seeds
🥭 Mango — remove the skin and pit
🍑 Peaches & nectarines — flesh only; ALWAYS remove the pit
🍍 Pineapple — fresh, peeled and in small pieces
🍊 Oranges — flesh only and in moderation
🥝 Kiwi — peeled and cut into small pieces

🚫 FRUITS TO KEEP AWAY FROM YOUR DOG

🍇 Grapes & raisins — TOXIC! Even small amounts can cause serious kidney injury in some dogs.
🍒 Cherries — the pits, stems and leaves contain cyanogenic compounds, and the pits are also a choking/obstruction risk.
🥑 Avocado — the pit is a major obstruction hazard, and the high fat content can cause GI upset; best avoided as a treat.
🍋 Large amounts of citrus — can cause stomach upset.

⚠️ DON’T FORGET THE PITS!
Peach, plum, nectarine, apricot and cherry pits can be dangerous if swallowed. Besides containing cyanogenic compounds, they can become lodged in the gastrointestinal tract.

🧊 SUMMER TIP: Freeze small pieces of dog-safe fruit for a refreshing enrichment treat on a hot day! Just remember that treats—including fruit—should make up only a small part of your dog’s daily diet.

And when introducing anything new, start with a tiny amount. Some dogs have much more sensitive stomachs than others… and Frenchie owners know exactly what we’re talking about. 😂💨

🦟🐾 MOSQUITOES & DOGS — MORE THAN JUST AN ITCH!

Mosquito season is here, and those annoying little bugs don’t just bother us—they bite our dogs too! While most mosquito bites cause nothing more than temporary itching or irritation, mosquitoes can also transmit heartworm disease. ❤️‍🩹

🦟 What can a mosquito bite look like?
You may notice:
• Small red or raised bumps
• Itching or scratching
• Mild swelling
• Irritated areas around the ears, nose or belly where fur is thinner

❤️ What about heartworm?
Heartworm is caused by a parasite called Dirofilaria immitis. An infected mosquito can transmit microscopic heartworm larvae when it bites a dog. Over time, these larvae can develop into adult worms that live in the heart and nearby blood vessels, potentially causing serious heart and lung disease.

🇨🇦 But we’re in Alberta—do we really need to think about it?
YES, it’s still worth being aware of! Heartworm risk varies by region and is generally higher in other parts of Canada and the United States. Dogs that travel outside Alberta may have increased exposure, so talk with your veterinarian about whether heartworm prevention and testing are appropriate for your dog.

🐾 Help reduce mosquito exposure:
• Avoid areas with heavy mosquito activity when possible
• Remove standing water around your yard
• Keep your dog indoors during peak mosquito times
• Talk to your veterinarian about parasite prevention, especially before travelling

⚠️ Important: Never apply human mosquito repellent to your dog unless your veterinarian specifically directs you to. Products containing DEET can be harmful to pets.

Summer is for patios, camping, hiking and adventures with our dogs—just don’t forget about the tiny pests that come along with it! ☀️🐶
