What's better than one gorilla? A whole troop! 😍

Female western lowland gorilla 'Johari' (right) is continuing to slowly get to know her new troop members. This week brought a big milestone: our dedicated Animal Care, Health & Welfare team spotted Johari building a nest on the ground in the outdoor habitat and taking a rest—a wonderful sign that she’s feeling safe and settled in her new home! 🥰

Stay tuned for more updates on Johari's journey! 🦍

Komodo dragons are famous for their suit of armor, made of bony plates known as osteoderms. But did you know that when they hatch, they don’t yet have osteoderms? 🤯 Osteoderms form as a Komodo dragon develops into an adult! 🦎

Earlier this month, members of our Conservation and Science and Conservation Education team travelled to Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, to take part in the annual Northern Whooping Crane Festival — a vibrant celebration of community and conservation. 💚

Hosted by the Thebacha Leadership Council (a collaboration between the Fort Smith Métis Council, Salt River First Nation, Tthebatthı Dënésułıné Nation, and the Town of Fort Smith), the festival marks the return of one of Canada’s most iconic and endangered birds to its nesting grounds in Wood Buffalo National Park.

From activities like bird-banding bracelet-making and a knowledge sharing talk, to a medicine walk and drum dance, we were grateful to connect with community members while sharing stories of whooping crane recovery.

Now in its second year, the festival brings people together through educational activities, crane-focused programming, and shared conservation stories — honouring the deep connections between people, place, and the recovery of the whooping crane.

What did we get up to at the inaugural Environmental Educators’ summit? Check it out!

At the end of July, formal and non-formal educators joined us at the zoo for days of strengthening their skills and learning best practices in environmental and climate education. We also headed out into the field to see our conservation programs in action.

We started with a visit to the Archibald Biodiversity Centre, touring our offsite facility that houses conservation breeding programs for species like the Vancouver Island marmot and the northern leopard frog. After that, it was off to the Blakiston Fan in Waterton Lakes National Park, home to the curiously isolated hairstreak, a tiny butterfly found nowhere else in the world. Here, we joined our partner, Parks Canada, to help with removing invasive spotted knapweed growing on the Fan. With the help of our field work team, we also got to test our butterfly net skills – and see this beautiful species up close! 🦋

Coming together like this enabled us to inspire, support, and empower educators who are helping create a generation of changemakers ready to protect Canada’s biodiversity. 🌎

There’s only a few more days to catch the Wilder Bunch and the Conservation Parade this season! 🥁

Featuring pawsitively wonderful puppets created by our friends at Green Fools Theatre Society, you’ll learn all about our conservation programs and what you can do to help care for wildlife and wild places. 💚

The Conservation Parade begins at 10 a.m. in Penguin Plaza (weather permitting). The final day of parades this season is Monday, September 1st. Be sure to stop by!

We know what you're thinking - ANOTHER ?! 🍉

Yes, our Malayan tapir 'Sempurna' is still expecting. Tapir gestation lengths are more variable than some other species, and there were several possible conception dates. 🤭 We estimated that Sempurna would give birth this month, but she is still safely within her expected birthing period. All signs currently indicate a normal, healthy progression in her pregnancy! 🍼

Calling all teachers! Registration for the Conservation Champions Festival is open! 👏

Get ready to take your students on a conservation journey that will spark a lifelong passion for wildlife and wild places. The Conservation Champions Festival offers an extraordinary opportunity for teachers and their students from kindergarten to Grade 12 to dive deep into conservation-based education. Running from September to May, this program encourages students to embark on inquiry-based learning journeys and take action for conservation. They’ll culminate their efforts by showcasing their conservation action projects at our annual May festival—an event you won’t want to miss!

Register now with the link: https://bit.ly/48S0ej0

We would like to thank our contributing partners, Bartlett Tree Experts, Plains Midstream Canada, and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, for investing in the Conservation Champions Festival program. This program was also generously supported in part by the Rogers Charity Classic and the Rogers Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink.

☀️🥵 Beating the heat, zoo-style! It’s a hot one! With a heat warning in effect, we’re keeping animal wellbeing front and centre.

Just like you might reach for an ice-cold drink, seek shade, or step inside with a fan, our Animal Care, Health & Welfare team helps animals stay cool with four wildly refreshing approaches:

💦 Water play – pools, sprinklers, and misters
🍧 Frozen enrichment – ice-sicles, fish-sicles & even blood-sicles (carnivores love them!)
🌳 Shade & shelter – shady spots, dens, and behind-the-scenes retreats
👀 Extra care – close observation to ensure every animal stays comfortable and safe

When you visit, don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, and water bottle—and see if you can spot our animals chilling out in their own special ways! 💙

We have a hatchday to celebrate! King penguin ‘George’ is six today! 🎉

Did you know that before they hatch, king penguin chicks call to their parents from inside their egg? 🥹 This allows chicks to establish a connection with their parents, who will remember the distinct sound of their chick’s voice. 🗣️

Visit Penguin Plunge to wish George a happy hatchday! 🐧
