At long last, the warm weather is back!...
And so are the parasites.
While ticks still stick around during our winters, they are most active during the warmer seasons. Ticks can spread Lyme disease, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia to our pets. In fact, we've already diagnosed several Lyme cases in the past few months.
Fleas are also more common during spring and summer, and can spread tapeworms. Tapeworms and other intestinal parasites are also more common once the snow melts to uncover all the "deposits" pets made in the fall.
And lastly, mosquitoes can endanger our pets by spreading heartworms. They usually start showing up in April or May, until October or November.
As it is said, "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure". Monthly preventative medications are recommended to keep these parasites and their diseases from infecting your furry family members.
