DO YOU KNOW WHAT SIGNS OF HARMFUL REACTIONSšŸ˜æšŸš‘ TO WATCH FOR WHEN USING FLEA & TICK CHEMICALS ON YOUR PET?šŸ’ŠšŸ’¦

As warmer weather approaches,ā˜€ļø it’s time to start thinking about protecting your pet from fleas, ticks, and even heartworm.🦟 When pet owners reach for those flea and tick treatments—whether chewables, spot-ons, or other parasiticide products—many don’t realize that adverse reactions can occur.

That’s why it’s crucial to know the signs and symptoms to look for so you can report any concerns to your veterinarian promptly.
The challenge is that different flea and tick treatments use various chemicals, each with its own potential side effects. For example, isoxazoline, a common insecticide, is highly lipophilic and easily absorbed by the body. It’s been known to cause a range of reactions, including seizures, behavior changes, gastrointestinal issues, and more.

These type of reactions can even happen in humans if ingested as a 2-year-old boy (12 kg), the son of a veterinarian, ingested two chewable tabletsšŸ’Š and developed an unsteady gait🫨 approximately 50 minutes later. By 2 hours after ingestion, he had ataxia, tremor, confusion and hallucinations. He was sedated with midazolam, and 10 hours after ingestion was only minimally ataxic.

According to a recent study published in Vet Record, ā€œThe true incidence of neurological adverse effects from isoxazolines remains unclear. The delay between the administration and onset of signs can be long, and the association may be missed. A lack of timing information in the summary of product characteristics could also contribute to missed attribution of adverse effects.ā€

It’s that time of year again with spring upon us skunks will be out I often get asked what to do if your dog get sprayed by a skunk. Yes this is a stinky situation that happens but it’s important not to panic. Here are some important tips.

1. The most important thing is DO NOT GET THE DOGS HAIR WET. Most people will immediately put the dog in the bath or hose them down outside this is a BIG NO NO. Why? Skunks spray is an oil and this will only set the oil into the skin more making it harder to get the smell out. Oil and Water don’t mix! Remember DO NOT GET WET.

2. DO NOT USE TOMATO JUICE! Why? Tomatos juice is mostly water and will set the oils in the hair. It’s also very acidic and can hurt your dogs skin.

So what can we do?

1. Make a mixture of 1 quart of 3% or 5% Hydrogen Peroxide, ¼ cup of baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap ( Dawn is the best). I always have these ingredients on hand in case I need them in an emergency!

Mix up all the ingredients at once and apply to your dogs DRY COAT, make sure to wear gloves and be very careful not to get this mixture in your dogs eyes. Rub it in and keep on for 10 - 30 minutes depending on severity of the spray. Rinse off and repeat if necessary!
I also should say this mixture is very unstable so DO NOT mix ahead of time. It also is more effective mixed fresh.

Check your dogs eyes for redness and pain. If they were sprayed in the face, Please take your Dog to the Veterinarian for an examination.

There is several commercial dog skunk shampoos that can also be purchase but should only be used after doing the above solution! My top go to is Skout's Honor Skunk Odor Eliminator
Ask me for my list of other products!

Please pass this along to others so that when a stinky situation happens they know what to do and what not to do!

REDUCING THE AMOUNT YOU FEED YOUR PET COULD BE DANGEROUS TO THEIR HEALTH!

Did you know there's a growing obesity epidemic among pets in the USšŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øšŸ¾? The struggle is real – but cutting back on their food may not be the solution.

US pet food companies have been using the same feeding instructions since 1932, providing way too many calories for today’s dogs and cats. When you feed your pet less food than what is recommended on the bag, they can end up protein and potentially nutrient deficient.

But when you follow the feeding guidelines on most bags, as an example, Blue Buffalo senior dog food, your less active dog will have gained 2.25 lbs by the end the bag!

So, what’s the solution: overweight or undernourished?

This Sunday at 12pm EST on the Inside Scoop, Steve Brown & Dr. Susan Recker are joining us to discuss why this is happening and how pet food feeding guidelines play a huge role in this epidemic. We'll show you how to choose the best foods with adequate protein to help prevent your beloved pet from becoming overweight and facing related health issues.

We'll be discussing:
🄩 Why feeding less than the recommended amount can lead to nutritional deficiencies, especially in protein.

šŸ™€ How feeding the recommended amount can contribute to weight gain, and what you can do about it.

šŸ“ˆ Why feeding directions on most US brands are too high.

We’ll also talk about what we’re doing to change this, and how you can help fix this issue in the pet food industry.

Don’t miss out on this important discussion — join us tomorrow on the Inside Scoop!

Wallace LOVES frisbee. In fact, he loves it so much that if I don’t toss it again within 3 seconds, he starts barking at me, loudly and relentlessly, as if to say, ā€œHey! Throw it! Now!ā€ (Video included in the commentsšŸ‘‡)

And you know what? That’s totally normal.

Dogs bark because barking is their way of talking to us. It’s how they tell us they’re excited, anxious, impatient, worried, or happy.

Wallace isn’t barking because he’s being difficult; he’s barking because he’s figured out an easy shortcut: Bark, and frisbee flies. Problem solved…for him.

The truth is, barking is often reinforced unintentionally by us humans. Every time Wallace barked and I immediately threw the frisbee, I taught him a simple lesson: ā€œWant the frisbee? Bark louder.ā€

It’s a human thing, too: barking dogs stress us out, and we instinctively want them quiet immediately. So we give in, tossing the toy, opening the door, giving them attention.

Momentarily, it feels like peace, and that quick relief becomes reinforcing…for us.

Professional trainers (and even everyday dog guardians) sometimes mistakenly believe barking can be stopped by yelling louder or by applying quick fixes like shock collars.

These strategies may deliver short-term silence, but at a real cost: stress, fear, and damaged trust.

The better, and kinder, answer is to pause and reflect: What’s my dog actually saying? If barking is communication, what message am I reinforcing?

In Wallace’s case, it’s simple: he’s learned ā€œbark = frisbee.ā€ I want to change that conversation without yelling, without punishing, and without causing him anxiety.

The goal is to teach Wallace patience and clarity instead of confusion and frustration.

Here’s the takeaway: You don’t stop barking by shutting your dog down, you stop it by understanding why it happens in the first place, then thoughtfully adjusting your own behavior.

In a future post, I’ll dive deeper into exactly HOW we’re teaching Wallace to communicate clearly and calmly without resorting to punishment or harsh methods.

ā€œEggshells are rich in calcium carbonate, about 800 milligrams! And the slippery membrane that lines the inside of the shell is loaded with collagen, elastin, protein, hyaluronic acid, glucosamine, and chondroitin, which provide fantastic joint support. Supplementing with eggshell membranes has even been shown to reduce joint pain by 72.5 percent.ā€ - The Forever Dog LIFE

Eggshell membrane, a natural byproduct of the egg industry, has gained significant attention as a valuable source of bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential. The key proteins in ESM (Eggshell membrane) play a fundamental role in cartilage health (1). While collagens provide tensile strength to the extracellular matrix (ECM) of cartilage, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid (HA) help maintain hydration and elasticity (2).

Furthermore, collagen types I, V, and X, elastin, and various growth factors included in ESM are critical for supporting cartilage repair (3). These properties make ESM an attractive candidate for promoting cartilage repair, especially in degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis (4). Similar to humans, dogs experience osteoarthritis, where chronic inflammation triggers oxidative stress, causing chondrocyte death, cartilage breakdown, and degradation of the ECM, ultimately leading to joint degeneration (5). Eggshell membrane has been shown to decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines and improve joint health in animal models and human studies, making it a popular ingredient in dietary supplements (6).

Packet Ranch's BREEDERS CORNERšŸ“•šŸ¾:
Puppy Socialization~ WHAT IS IT???
It is TIME to Debunk the Myth of what Puppy Socialization is! Most people think it is exposing your puppy to everything & everywhere, getting them to play with other people & other dogs~creating a Social Aussie ButterflyšŸ¾šŸ¦‹... BUT what it REALLY is, is teaching your Aussie APPROPRIATE behavior when encountering new people/places & things~ getting them to focus on YOU when something New comes along. NOT every Aussie is going to be a Social Butterfly, some will bond to only their specific person or family & some just do NOT care to associate with other dogs. They are no different than us humans, some love to be busy & in a crowd of people & others are happiest at home in their own space. Make things easy for your puppy to thrive! By doing the work that socialization involves, you will be able to take your Aussie out of it's comfort zone & still have it able to behave, as they should have 100% trust in you keeping him/her safe from the outside world. Training is baby steps AND is an ongoing process...
Packet Ranch~Ghost Eye Aussies..... food for thought....

Here is a good write up on this topic from trainer Sean O Shea
The Good Dog Training & Rehabilition
Here’s another post I share annually. Many, many owners (and trainers) have found life changing insight and value from this short read. I hope it’s helpful. šŸ™
——
Okay, so this is a word that gets an awful lot of play in the training world, and it’s definition has come to mean an awful lot of things. Many of which, are incredibly counter-productive, if not downright dangerous.
So let’s see if we can’t clarify a few things.
Socialization isn’t:
-About letting your dog freely interact with dogs at the dog park, day care, or with friends dogs.
-About allowing your dog to meet other dogs on-leash.
-About allowing all manner of people, in all manner of mental/emotional states interact/pet/pressure your dog.
-About exposing your dog to the sights and sounds of cars, buses, motorcycles, bikes, skateboards, joggers...and allowing them to freak out, panic, aggress, hide, bark etc.
-About exposing your dog to the sights and sounds of dogs, cats, and other animals, and allowing them to freak out, aggress, lunge, bark, growl etc.
Socialization is:
-About teaching your dog the proper responses to dogs. What is and isn’t appropriate behavior, and correcting the unwanted when it appears.
-About teaching your dog to walk by the barking, lunging dog(s) on walks and ignore them, completely. Correcting if necessary to achieve this result.
-About advocating for your dog and ensuring people aren’t allowed to pressure your dog, by touching, crouching down, attempting ā€œkissesā€ etc. That means being a big boy or girl, and stopping others from engaging in unwanted, uninvited interactions.
-About exposing your dog to all manner of daily life ā€œthingsā€ and ensuring a proper response. If aggression/arousal is present, it’s corrected, if fear/arousal is present (and causes an overreaction/fleeing etc.) it’s corrected. Ask your dog to learn to ignore and not care about these ā€œlifeā€ distractions/concerns/temptations. Teach them to listen to the training, not the world around them.
-About teaching your dog to leave other creatures alone. The cat, the bird, the cow, the goat, the other dog, is simply none of their business. If they decide those things are their business, it’s your job to correct and clarify what is and isn’t their business for them.
Socialization has become a ridiculously simplified, dumbed down, all-encompassing idea. Free interaction and exposure have been presented as a panacea, the magic gateway to a balanced dog. That’s a whole lot of B.S. you’ve been sold, by a lot of people full of B.S. šŸ™‚
Socialization is all about teaching your dog how to behave and exist in the world...properly. People have a belief that only interactions create a well socialized dog. They don’t understand that existence is almost always preferable, and more valuable than actual interaction. Yes exposure is critical, but exposure without 100% clear guidance, and corrections for poor choices, isn’t socialization, it’s chaos, and it’s not teaching your dog what’s right, what’s wrong, and that you’ll keep them safe, so they don’t have to.
A well socialized dog isn’t fazed by the world around them. And that doesn’t come from simple exposure and interactions without guidance. Ironically, that’s precisely how you create anti-social dogs.
Think on that for a minute.

Happy New Year! Love being a breeder and learning so much from so many!

Creating Dreams, that's what I do!!
People who think that breeders only use their dogs to make puppies are wrong.
I don't make puppies with my dogs, I Create Dreams with my dogs!!
Every litter I create starts with a dream and every puppy that comes from that dream helps making someone else's dream to come true.
So you, yes you, who knocked on the door of a breeder for a puppy to do Agility or you, who want a puppy to practice Flyball, doggy dancing, obedience or any kind of sport ...
We didn't give you a puppy, but we shared our dream with you.
All we ask in return is to appreciate and cherish our dream so that you can create your own dream together with "our" puppy and we can enjoy all your adventures to come !!
"DREAMS ARE THE HEARTBEAT OF AMBITION. IF YOUR DREAMS DON'T MAKE YOUR HEART RACE, YOU'RE NOT DREAMING BIG ENOUGH."
And every puppy makes my heart race and I also wish that for the people who share one of my dreams ā¤ļø.
So NO , I don't breed dogs ...I create dreams !!!
PS; For the creators of dreams, feel free to share , modified or not, or with your own photo of your dream 🄰.
