Fran's Wiggling Worms

Fran's Wiggling Worms Welcome to Fran's Wiggling Worm's official page! Sadly, the pandemic began as this project was taking off and all plans were put to a halt.

Follow along for an abundance of worm photos, expert tips and advice, and to join a community of worm parents striving to positively support their little wigglers In 2019, Fran was attending a post-secondary institution in British Columbia, Canada where no composting program existed and all food waste went into the garbage. Unfortunately, the school's volunteer-led composting p

rogram ended and city composting was also not available due to the location of the school. As a result, Fran and her friend, Laura, researched vermicomposting and decided to make small DIY worm bins to begin composting their food scraps. Upon introducing their work to other students, there was a high demand from students living in residence. Fran and Laura decided to approach student housing with a plan to implement a vermicomposting program into the residence buildings. Fran and Laura also no longer attend this school. However, this was not the end of vermicomposting for Fran! She has been caring for them ever since and decided to start Fran's Wiggling Worms because of the difficulty she had finding worms in BC. Not only would she be a worm supplier, but she could share her knowledge and experience with others. These resources ensured that everyone's little wigglers would be happy and others could have successful vermicomposting set-ups like her!

Worm tea is not the new super drink for you, but it is for your plants! Your worm castings are not only great manure, but can also be transformed into liquid gold. Be sure not to accidentally mix up your worm leachate and your worm tea because only one of them is liquid gold!

Not sure what worm leachate is or how to make worm tea? Click below to read more and be sure to save this link for future reference! If you've used worm tea before, comment below and let us know if you saw a difference with your plants after.

Worms can create an effective organic fertilizer for your plants. The process of vermicomposting—using worms to decompose organic matter and food scraps—allows you to make a worm compost tea that serves as a non-toxic alternative to chemical fertilizer.

Bread? Cucumbers? Lemons? What can worms even eat? Unfortunately, worms can be picky eaters, but it's not their fault...they just have sensitive stomachs 😓.

BUT, do not worry any longer! Our team designed a fun and simple infographic so that your worms never go to bed with an upset stomach. We highly recommend posting it near your bin so that your worms' special dietary restrictions are well known by anyone who may feed them while you aren't looking...

Everybody's worms eat different things just like us! Amy Skulj gave us an inside scoop of her bin with her five-month-old worms:

"My worms absolutely love parsley. I can add in 10 different things at the same time and put the parsley out of the way, but they always go for it first! Every Friday, they always get a big heap of parsley for dessert. I have to make sure that my kids are strong and well-fed. Also, big thanks to Fran and her team for providing me with such lovely kiddos!"

Comment down below and tell us if your worms also have a favourite food and what it is? Do we have more parsley-loving worms or are they hooked on cilantro instead?

We love putting our worms to work and seeing what they are capable of! This time-lapse shows them devouring this pumpkin in 62 days.

What vegetable should we do next? The comment with the highest number of likes will be chosen for the next video AND 1 like = $1 for that comment. The donation will be sent to the highest commenter's environmental charity of choice!

Some more details about the operation: Half of the worms were placed inside the pumpkin and the other half outside the pumpkin. We thought this would help speed up the process because it would allow the worms to consume the pumpkin from the bottom as well as throughout its inner surface...and it did!
