To conquer loose-leash walking, we need to take it one step at a time, and the very first one is the equipment you use.

Maren Bruun of Paw In Hand shares these three essentials to enjoying a loose-leash walk with your dog.

1️⃣Well-fitted harness: that is comfortable for the dog to wear.
2️⃣Long leash: Remember that it is important that you can safely and effectively handle it.
3️⃣Treat pouch with lots of treats: because there are plenty of things that compete for your attention!

We talk all about loose-leash walking at https://animalkind.ca/all-about-leash-walking/

NEWS: Upcoming changes to BC SPCA community animal centre in Burnaby

The BC SPCA has been advised by the City of Burnaby - Local Government of plans to fully rebuild a new animal shelter facility at the current BC SPCA Burnaby location. The current centre will close at the end of the day on Sunday, May 24.

Since the Burnaby centre was constructed in the 1960s, we’ve come a long way in our knowledge and research into building design best practices for animal welfare and look forward to a new facility better suited to the needs of the animals and people of Burnaby.

We want to reassure the Burnaby community that during the construction period, the BC SPCA team will continue to serve our community and the animals we love. We are fortunate to have multiple locations across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley that will continue to provide vital services. A small, dedicated temporary facility will also open in Burnaby to support community members who have found a stray animal, or those who need to access food and supplies through our pet food bank service.

Let's help Archie find his forever home! ♥

🐾 Are You a Hound Person? Meet Archie! 🐾

Do you love the soulful eyes, the curious noses, and the larger-than-life personalities that make hound breeds so special? Do you have a bit of space outside the hustle and bustle of city life where a young dog can stretch his legs, sniff to his heart’s content, and truly thrive?

If so… we’d love to introduce you to Archie 💛
Archie is our charismatic charmer — a handsome, one-year-old boy bursting with love, energy, and potential. Like many young pups, Archie just needed a bit of guidance and support in his early days. Unfortunately, his previous owner found themselves unable to keep up with his training needs, and Archie is now looking for a fresh start with someone who can help him become the amazing dog he’s meant to be.

He’s been patiently waiting in our care for 62 days, and we know his perfect match is out there somewhere.

✨ A few things to know about Archie:
🐶 He can be a little dog-selective — but often it’s just excitement getting the best of him!
🚗 He’s still learning that vehicles aren’t so scary — with patience, he’ll get there.
💫 He’s young, eager, and full of potential — he just needs someone willing to grow with him.

Archie is the kind of dog who will reward your time and patience tenfold. With the right guardian to help bring calm and consistency to his world, this boy is going to shine.

💕 What Archie really needs:

A patient, understanding home
Someone ready to guide a young dog through training
A space where he can be his hound-y self

If you’re ready to open your heart (and your home) to a dog who just needs a chance, Archie is waiting for you.

📋 Think you might be the one?
