🐾 It’s Wellness Wednesday at BAH 🐾
Today we are getting up close and personal with a local “celebrity” that wreaks havoc on our seasons, especially this time of year.
This tiny arthropod carries several diseases that can be harmful to both us and our pets. We all know its name… the tick.
This is what a fully engorged tick looks like. For reference, we used a ruler and Brea’s brave index finger as a volunteer to show just how large this tick had become. 😳
Based on its size and appearance, it is estimated this tick had been attached and feeding for approximately 5–7 days. Ticks can become surprisingly large once fully engorged, which is why routine tick checks are so important after spending time outdoors.
A few tick tips:
• Check your pets daily, especially around the ears, neck, toes, and armpits
• Keep pets on flea/tick prevention
• Remove ticks promptly and carefully
• Monitor for redness, swelling, lethargy, or changes in appetite after a tick bite
• Schedule a Lyme/ Heartworm test 6-8 weeks after the tick was removed with your pet's Veterinarian.
If you ever find a tick and are unsure how to safely remove it, our team is always happy to help! 🐶🐱
