I crate train my dogs.
I crate train my dogs, and make sure that any other dog who comes into my home is used to the crate (in a positive manner).
Why?
I do it because I love them.
Dogs are opportunistic animals, some more than others.
If they become bored or anxious, they chew things. If they chew the wrong thing while not supervised, at the very least, it can be a very expensive vet bill.
I also have a house full of children. Yes, my children are socialized with dogs, and my dog is socialized with them. But that doesn't mean that accidents don't happen. In order to minimize the dog getting overwhelmed or the kids getting hurt, if I can't supervise, the dog goes outside or in her crate.
Dogs are also naturally drawn to small, comfortable spaces that they can have to themselves. Their crate soon becomes like a den to them. Which gives them the perfect place to rest and recharge without worry of children, other animals, or getting under foot.
Does that mean that I keep my dog in her crate all the time? No. My dog is allowed to be around the house. She also has the ability to come and go outside a lot of the time on her lead when the door is left open.
I want my dog to be happy and healthy. The first step towards that goal is ensuring she is crate trained.
