If you come across an injuried turtle?

The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre released the following information on their page.

Over the weekend, they surpassed over 700 intakes and are currently receiving an extremely high volume of calls every day. They are hopeful by releasing the following information that you it will help if you come across an injuried turtle..

• If you find an injured turtle, please place it in a dry container, note the exact location where it was found, and call us at 705-741-5000, option 9. Please leave only one voicemail and our team will get back to you as soon as they can. Their hospital is open daily between 8:00am-8:00pm, and if you can drive the turtle to us, please use our hospital entrance and hand it off to a staff member during these operating hours.

• Can't drive to Peterborough? We can help assist getting the turtle to our hospital through our volunteer Turtle Taxi Program! You MUST have the turtle in your possession for them to be able to assist, as they don't have resources to travel and locate each turtle. Keep in mind that it will take time to arrange these rides. While you wait, leave the turtle in the well-ventilated container. Place it in a location that is dark, quiet, room temperature, and away from pets.

Make sure to check for babies in pouches of recently killed by car opossums.

That is how these little guys ended up with us. A kind passerby noticed movement and brought us these little ones.

We will be able to raise them and release them in suitable habitat near where the mum was found.

Worthy of sharing.

Not every bird at the feeder wants sunflower seeds. The feeder you bought, the seed you filled it with, and the height you hung it at determine which species show up — and which ones fly past.

The titmouse takes one seed, flies to a branch, holds it with her feet, and hammers it open. The chickadee caches seeds in bark crevices and retrieves them weeks later. The blue jay buries acorns — and the ones he forgets become oak trees.

🌿 The birds most feeders miss:

Mourning doves and juncos feed on the ground. A tube feeder means nothing to them. Scatter millet below the feeder and they appear.

The goldfinch wants nyjer seed in a tube with small ports — not the sunflower hopper the cardinal uses.

The hummingbird wants sugar water at a 4-to-1 ratio. No red dye. Changed every two to three days.

Match the food to the bird. The species list changes overnight 🐾

Most pet parents focus on what’s in their pet’s bowl🥣, but this conversation shows that what the food is stored in matters just as much!

Materials like glass, food grade ceramic, and stainless steel sit at the top because they’re inert and don’t interact with food, while plastics fall into a spectrum depending on their type, quality, and condition. More stable plastics like #2, #4, and #5 can be reasonable options, but they’re still not completely inert, especially over time with exposure to fats, heat, and wear. Lower-quality or unknown plastics ( #3, #6, 7) raise more concern due to additives and higher potential for chemical migration, particularly when containers become scratched, cloudy, or degraded. Silicone is stable for short term use, but capable of absorbing oils and odours with long-term use.

One of the most practical takeaways is that storage habits matter: keeping kibble in its original bag and placing the whole bag inside a container helps reduce direct contact and preserves freshness. It’s nearly impossible to eliminate plastic entirely, but reducing long-term exposure from everyday storage is possible.
