Sugar. It's bad for your teeth. It's bad for your waistline. So, have you ditched the usual snacks for sugar-free? 🤔
If so, then your dog needs to watch out 🐶
Many sugar-free snacks contain a sweetener called xylitol. For us, this tastes sweet on our tongues, but does little else.
The same is not true of your dog.
Instead, your dog's body mistakes xylitol for sugar, and releases insulin to deal with it...
..but, having had no sugar, the insulin instead causes a sudden, dangerous drop in blood sugar which can be life-threatening 🚨
Keep an eye out for spreads like peanut butter & jam, sugar-free candy, gum or baked goods, protein bars, ice creams & frozen desserts, as well as toothpastes & bathroom products, all of which can contain xylitol. 🚫 Keep them under lock & key away from your best friend.
Even a very small amount of xylitol can be fatal for your dog - for small dogs, amounts as low as 0.02% of their body weight could cause serious harm. So, if you suspect your dog has eaten any, it is imperative to get them to a vet immediately.
