Trapper Girl and Hawkeye are bonded siblings and two of the most engaging cats you’ll ever meet. Hawkeye and Trapper Girl are former colony cats who have made huge progress since coming to Safe Haven. Hawkeye is playful and comical, and full of mischief. Trapper Girl is more demure, but ready to frolic with Hawkeye at the drop of a hat.

Both of these charming young cats are personable and very resilient. Trapper Girl and Hawkeye have both tested positive for FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus), but have many years of life ahead. They present as totally normal, energetic, and smile-inducing young cats. FeLV is not transmissible to humans but can transmitted to other cats. For that reason, Trapper Girl and Hawkeye need an adoptive home where they can flourish as the only cats in the house.

Potential adopters should know that Safe Haven has a program called A Fighting Chance. In cases of cats with FIV or FeLV, Safe Haven waives the adoption fee and will continue to help with any issues directly related to their diagnosis. Trapper Girl and Hawkeye are healthy as can be, and are looking forward to a new forever home.

If you know someone who could help these babies , please reach out to Janet @ 902-698-9203

Lyme Disease in Dogs – Overview for Pet Owners

What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is an infectious illness caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged ticks (Ixodes species), commonly known as deer ticks.

How Do Dogs Get Lyme Disease?
Dogs become infected when bitten by a tick carrying the Lyme bacteria. The tick typically must be attached for 24–48 hours for transmission to occur.

Ticks are most active in:
Spring and summer (but can be present year-round in some regions, like the Annapolis Valley)
Wooded, grassy, or marshy areas

Signs and Symptoms in Dogs
Many infected dogs don’t show symptoms, but when they do, signs may include:
Limping or shifting leg lameness (can come and go)
Fever
Lethargy
Swollen joints
Decreased appetite
Enlarged lymph nodes
Rarely: kidney issues, which can lead to vomiting, weight loss, and increased thirst/urination

Diagnosis
Diagnosis is typically based on:
History of tick exposure
Clinical signs
Blood tests, such as: SNAP 4Dx or Quantitative C6 antibody test (measures the level of antibodies to guide treatment)

Treatment
Antibiotics, typically doxycycline, are the mainstay of treatment, given for at least 28 days
Improvement is usually seen within 1–3 days
In some cases, additional pain relief or anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed

Prevention
Year-round tick prevention
Vaccination: Lyme vaccines are available and may be recommended in high-risk areas
Tick checks: Inspect your dog (and yourself) after walks in grassy or wooded areas
Environmental control: Keep lawns mowed, clear brush, and avoid tall grasses

Is It Contagious to Humans?
No. Dogs cannot transmit Lyme disease directly to humans, but they can carry ticks into the home. Humans can also be bitten by the same ticks that infect dogs.

When to See a Vet
Contact your veterinarian if your dog:
Is limping without an injury
Seems unusually tired or feverish
Has known tick exposure and shows signs of illness

Here at Berwick Animal Hospital, we are seeing more and more positive Lyme cases as well as other tick born disease. Please don't hesitate to ask us about tick prevention and the Lyme vaccine.
