Heartworm is a preventable, but serious and potentially fatal, parasite that primarily infects dogs, cats and ferrets. It can also infect a variety of wild animals, including wild canids (e.g., foxes, wolves, coyotes).
All dogs and cats are susceptible to heartworm infection. Because mosquitoes can sneak into homes, even pets kept strictly indoors are at risk.
Heartworm is a progressive, life-threatening disease. The earlier it is detected and treated, the better the chances that your pet will recover and have less complications.
We recommend annual heartworm testing, even when dogs are on heartworm prevention year-round, to ensure that the prevention program is working. Heartworm medications are highly effective, but dogs can still become infected. If you miss just one dose of a monthly medication—or give it late—it can leave your dog unprotected. If your puppy was born after November 1st 2024, they don't require a 4Dx test this year but they should be started on a monthly prevention.
Call us today to book your dog's heartworm test (which also tests for 3 tick-borne diseases!), and to get started on your monthly prevention for the summer months.
