Check out this fun new addition to our renovated exam rooms! 🐾

A lot of thoughtful planning went into our layout and design with one goal in mind: helping your pets feel as comfortable and stress-free as possible during their visits.

For our feline friends, we’ve created cozy little hideaways where cats can retreat, explore, and settle in while they’re here. The design allows cats to enter through an open access hole, creating a safe space that feels secure and familiar. When it’s time to come out, the entire hide box slides out like a drawer—making access easier while reducing handling and minimizing stress.

Because a calmer cat means a better experience for everyone. 🐱💙

‼️What is Echinococcus? Why Alberta Pet Owners Should Pay Attention

Did you know that a tiny parasite called Echinococcus is becoming increasingly common in parts of Alberta?

Echinococcus is a tapeworm carried primarily by wild canids such as coyotes, foxes, and wolves. Dogs can become infected when they hunt or scavenge infected rodents or come into contact with environments contaminated by parasite eggs.

While many infected dogs show no obvious signs of illness, they can shed parasite eggs in their f***s, potentially exposing other animals and even people. In rare cases, dogs can get disease similar to humans and develop internal cysts that often require surgery and multiple anti-parasitic treatments.

Why is this important?
Cases of Echinococcus have been increasing across Alberta, particularly in areas where wildlife and domestic pets interact. Although the risk to individual pet owners remains relatively low, infection in humans can cause a serious disease called hydatid disease, which can affect the liver and other organs.

How can you protect your dog and family?
✔ Keep dogs from hunting or eating rodents and wildlife carcasses
✔ Practice good hand hygiene after handling pets or cleaning up f***s. Especially when children are in the home.
✔ Pick up dog waste promptly
✔ Regular deworming

Deworming matters.
Regular deworming with products effective against tapeworms can help eliminate Echinococcus before it becomes a problem. Depending on your dog’s lifestyle and exposure risk, your veterinarian may recommend more frequent parasite prevention.

If your dog enjoys off-leash adventures, spends time in rural areas, or has access to rodents, talk to our team about the best parasite prevention plan.

Sadie the Survivor 💞

Sadie recently came to see Dr. Ian for a second opinion after becoming critically ill despite initial treatment elsewhere. She was in very poor condition and deteriorating rapidly.

After running diagnostics, we discovered Sadie was suffering from severe pancreatitis and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) — a life-threatening complication of uncontrolled diabetes. At the time of admission, Sadie was critically unwell.

Sadie was immediately hospitalized and started on intensive, life-saving treatment. She required aggressive fluid therapy, insulin management, and ongoing care for severe, persistent vomiting. For several days, her condition remained very serious, but thanks to the dedication of her family — who gave us the time needed to help her fight — Sadie finally began to turn the corner after nearly a week in hospital.

Today, Sadie’s diabetes is being carefully managed, and although we’re still fine-tuning her insulin dose, she’s back home and enjoying life with the people who love her most 💞

Happy Veterinary Assistant Week to our wonderful Kendra! 💗

Kendra first joined us for her work placement while undertaking her studies. Since then, she took on a part time and now a full time role at the clinic. You’ll see her buzzing around helping everyone - taking your pets history, walking and caring for hospital patients, keeping the clinic clean and stocked, helping at reception, running lab work, helping with X-rays and ultrasounds and so much more!

We’re so grateful to have Kendra apart of our team, she’s a vital member and we feel a little lost when she’s not here! Thank you Kendra 💗

All hands in for Huey! 💗

Huey is an elderly cat who has been struggling with fluid accumulation on his chest and we’ve been draining it to keep him comfortable and alleviate the stress on his breathing. He’s a great cat and allows us to do this with just the aid of a creamy treat! (Until he decides he’s had enough of course!).

This is what team work looks like - RVT Brooke holding him, RVT Amy feeding the creamy treat, VA Kendra performing the drainage and Dr Kelly positioning the needle into the pleural space. Performing this procedure in this manner allowed us to do it as safely as possible, alleviate our patients discomfort and get it done quickly!

Would you believe Huey was hiding 350ml around his lungs!

🐾 Is your senior dog slowing down? It might be more than “just old age.” 🐾

As dogs age, many develop osteoarthritis — a painful condition that can make everyday activities uncomfortable. Because the changes often happen gradually, it can be easy to miss the signs.

Here are some common things pet owners may notice at home:

✔️ Difficulty getting up after resting
✔️ Stiffness, especially after walks or naps
✔️ Slower on stairs or hesitant to jump into the car
✔️ Limping or favoring a leg
✔️ Sleeping more or less interested in walks/play
✔️ Irritability or sensitivity when touched
✔️ Slipping on floors or struggling with footing
✔️ Muscle loss in the back legs
✔️ Lagging behind on walks

The good news? There are more options than ever to help dogs stay comfortable, mobile, and happy. 🐶💙

Our clinic offers a wide range of osteoarthritis management options, including:

✨ Nutraceuticals & joint supplements
✨ Monoclonal antibody therapy
✨ Joint & cartilage support injections
✨ Therapeutic laser treatments
✨ Pain management medications
✨ Diet management and senior adjustments
✨ Customized multimodal care plans

If your dog seems stiff, sore, or just “not themselves,” we’d love to help. Early intervention can make a huge difference in quality of life.

📞 Contact us to book an arthritis assessment and discuss the best options for your pet.

Today, we said goodbye as Mum and Grandma begin their long journey home. While it’s never easy to say bye, we’re incredibly grateful for our amazing family and for this wonderful community who makes us feel a little less alone when everyone goes back home 💗
