‼️What is Echinococcus? Why Alberta Pet Owners Should Pay Attention
Did you know that a tiny parasite called Echinococcus is becoming increasingly common in parts of Alberta?
Echinococcus is a tapeworm carried primarily by wild canids such as coyotes, foxes, and wolves. Dogs can become infected when they hunt or scavenge infected rodents or come into contact with environments contaminated by parasite eggs.
While many infected dogs show no obvious signs of illness, they can shed parasite eggs in their f***s, potentially exposing other animals and even people. In rare cases, dogs can get disease similar to humans and develop internal cysts that often require surgery and multiple anti-parasitic treatments.
Why is this important?
Cases of Echinococcus have been increasing across Alberta, particularly in areas where wildlife and domestic pets interact. Although the risk to individual pet owners remains relatively low, infection in humans can cause a serious disease called hydatid disease, which can affect the liver and other organs.
How can you protect your dog and family?
✔ Keep dogs from hunting or eating rodents and wildlife carcasses
✔ Practice good hand hygiene after handling pets or cleaning up f***s. Especially when children are in the home.
✔ Pick up dog waste promptly
✔ Regular deworming
Deworming matters.
Regular deworming with products effective against tapeworms can help eliminate Echinococcus before it becomes a problem. Depending on your dog’s lifestyle and exposure risk, your veterinarian may recommend more frequent parasite prevention.
