Meet Louie! One our our newest- and biggest- senior patients! 💜

Did you know that giant breed dogs become seniors much earlier than most people expect?

While smaller dogs may not be considered “senior” until 8–10 years old, giant breeds (like Great Danes, Mastiffs, and Saint Bernards) often enter their senior years around 5–6 years of age.

That means earlier screening, earlier support, and more proactive care can make a big difference in their quality of life.

Winter is a slow season and it might be time to lower the expectation for our seniors. Cold weather hurts achy, aging joints and shorter or even no walks are ok. Rest is productive too!
Enrich the environment with snuffle mats, puzzle toys, and lick-it mats to keep your pets busy and not feeling cooped up.

Take advantage of the slow season and meet them where they are 💜

L’hiver est une saison plus lente, et c’est correct de baisser les attentes pour nos chiens âgés.
Le froid peut faire mal à leurs articulations vieillissantes, alors des promenades plus courtes — ou même aucune promenade — c’est correct.
Le repos aussi, c’est productif.

Enrichissez l’environnement de votre chien avec des tapis de fouille, des jouets interactifs et des tapis de léchage pour l’occuper et éviter qu’il se sente pris à l’intérieur.

Profitez de la saison plus tranquille pour rejoindre votre chien là où il est 💜

A sweet client said goodbye to her beloved companion this week and sent us this very touching poem which she hoped may help someone in the midst of making a difficult decision. 💜

The Hardest Choice

I’m choosing not the end,
but the way her ending goes—
not sorrow in a frightened night,
but peace in soft repose.

I’m choosing not to wait until
her world becomes too small,
until her breath grows heavy
and her body starts to fall.

I’m choosing love, the quiet kind
that listens when she sighs,
that sees the tired in her bones,
the fading in her eyes.

I’m choosing to be with her
before the hurting starts,
to let her leave this gentle world
still wrapped inside our hearts.

I’m choosing one last perfect day
before the hard days come—
a final calm, a tender touch,
a whispered “you are loved.”

So if you wonder why I choose
to let her go this way,
it’s because goodbye with dignity
is kinder than one more day.

I choose the moment gently,
with love and aching grace—
so she can drift to sleep
with peace upon her face.

In Loving Memory of Monty

We remember today a truly special dog who touched every heart he met.

Monty was a gentle, sweet soul who brought immeasurable love and joy to his family. Some of his happiest days were spent at the cottage up north, where he found peace in the open air and the thrill of chasing deer.

We will never forget his kind spirit and the deep bond he shared with his family. 💜
