Susie and I attended a scent workshop over the weekend and I learned the coolest thing!

Susie has always been very good at scent games. With my limited scent work knowledge, I’ve always been super impressed at how fast she caught on.

During the break, I was chatting with the instructors and mentioned who her breeder was, to which they said “you know your dog has already been imprinted to wintergreen?”.

So after the workshop, I messaged her breeder. Sure enough, she told me as soon as her puppies are started on food, she pairs the odour wintergreen (the first odour in competition) with their meals. It becomes engrained that wintergreen = supper time.

Susie can basically sniff wintergreen out of anywhere. Here I thought she was just really smart 🤣

Moral of the story, dogs don’t forget. They remember everything, whether it’s good or bad.

Here you have one of the many differences between a good breeder and a back yard breeder.

ALSO, Susie has a major food obsession and she was focused enough on fining the odour that she completely bypassed the first bin with hotdogs and freeze dried liver! 🤩

Last night was the last night of August puppy classes! It’s always bittersweet, but I’m so happy to see some of them will be joining the “big kid” classes in September!

As you can see, the puppies got to experience lots of new things last night, including grooming tools, obstacles, surfaces, and horses!

It has been a pleasure watching them all learn and grow. I’m so proud of each puppy, as well as their owners for putting in the hard work each week!

They are seriously all so amazing, but I would like to give a special shout out to both Lex and Ruby for the huge progress they made.

Lex showed up as a fearful puppy. We didn’t push him, but instead let him go at his pace, working up to him being off leash AND having fun with the others.

Ruby started off as a private client. She went so easily over threshold (typical Jack Russel energy 🤣). Her whole family worked so hard, to the point of her being able to quietly observe the puppies, then also join them for some play time. She was definitely the life of the party!

Wow, I was not expecting this when I opened my email this morning 🤩🤩🤩

UPCOMING GROUP CLASSES: SEPTEMBER 2025

🐶 PUPPY CLASS:

Socialization might not be what you think. It’s not about letting your puppy say hi to every dog and person they see. It’s about safe, positive, and age-appropriate exposure to the world around them.

Puppy class helps your pup build confidence through safe exposure to new sounds, surfaces, people, animals, and objects, all in a controlled environment.

• For puppies 20 weeks (5 months) and under
• Wednesday evenings, 6-7 pm

🐶 LEASH SKILLS:

Leash Skills Class focuses on building loose leash walking skills so that walks are calmer, more enjoyable, and less stressful for both ends of the leash. You’ll learn practical techniques to teach your dog how to walk politely beside you, tune in to your cues, and manage distractions along the way.

• For dogs 5 months and up
• Wednesday evenings, 7-8 pm

🐶 SPORT FOUNDATION CLASS:

All dog sports have one thing in common: a dog who is engaged with their handler.

Sport Foundation class focuses on building that engagement, along with body awareness and impulse control, taught through fun games and clear communication.

While this class is a great starting point for future sport dogs, it’s also perfect for anyone wanting to build solid skills for everyday life.

• For dogs 5 months and up
• Thursday evenings, 6–7 PM

🐶 RALLY & OBEDIENCE DROP-IN NIGHTS:

Drop-in nights for anyone wanting to practice signs, improve handling, or just try something new in a supportive group environment.

All skill levels welcome (dogs must have a basic understanding of sit, down, and stay and be able to work around other dogs).

• For dogs 5 months and up
• Thursday evenings, 7-8 pm

Early, safe socialization is one of the most important things you can do for your puppy, but I've been hearing some misconceptions about what that means. Hopefully this clears a few things up!

Some common mistakes I see:
- Forcing puppies to say hi to every person and dog they meet
- Bringing timid or fearful puppies everywhere to “get them use to it”
- Sending nervous puppies to daycare or the dog park

Daycare settings are often overwhelming and dog parks can be unpredictable (and full of germs), especially for young puppies. This can end up increasing fear or reactivity instead of reducing it.

It is, however, super important that puppies experience a wide variety of people, places, sights, sounds and surfaces. What you should do is introduce them safely and at a rate they are comfortable so they learn the world is a great place!

Here is a helpful socialization checklist:https://ultimatepuppy.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/ultimatepuppy_social_schedule_NEW_02.pdf
