On the topic of introducing puppies to grooming tools last week, did you know getting your dog comfortable with grooming, handling, and vet care is part of your job as their guardian?

Your vet and groomer can help make these experiences positive, but they shouldnโ€™t be the first people teaching your dog that nail clippers, brushes, ear cleaning, paw handling, restraint, having their body examined, etc. are safe.

Starting these skills early can help your dog develop positive associations with handling and grooming and build confidence with these experiences.

Itโ€™s also not just about getting your puppy used to being handled. Itโ€™s about learning to read their body language too.

When we recognize their subtle signals, we can adjust our approach before they become overwhelmed and help build trust instead.

I help introduce puppies to handling and grooming tools in a positive way while teaching their humans how to understand and respond to their puppyโ€™s communication.

The goal isnโ€™t to force our dogs to tolerate handling. Itโ€™s to help them feel safe, build trust and participate in their own care.

Working on cooperative care at home helps set your dog up for success and keeps everyone safer when it comes time to have these things done!

๐Ÿ‘Œ And me, Lori-Lee, from Your Happy Dog Coach

๐Ÿ• Can I bring my Dawg? Sorry... this one will be humans only!
Althoughโ€ฆ we may smuggle in a dog or three of our own for demonstrations. ๐Ÿ˜‰)

Here's where YOU come in:
What do you want us to talk about?

- What's one question you've wanted to ask a trainer but never had the opportunity?

Let us know in the comments!
Because we want to build this event around what YOU actually want to know.

So please, come hang out with us, learn something useful, ask all your dog questions, and hopefully leave feeling a little more confident and connected with your canine companion.

All kinds of shorebirds are migrating through Nova Scotia right now. Plovers, sandpipers, fascinating arctic breeders and local birds are all stocking up on calories to help them make the long journey southward. You can do your part by giving birds space on the beach, picking up beach garbage, reporting sightings to platforms like eBird, and keeping beach going pets under control to minimize birds' fleeing and wasting energy.

We know some pups have a hard time not chasing wildlife. Need some help? Have you heard of Look At That games? What about Predation Substitute Training? Did you know you can give your dog an outlet for their natural instincts while keeping wildlife safe? Learn more at https://predation-substitute-training.com/

We also know that leash walking can be a literal drag for dogs and their owners. Have you tried a biothane longline and comfortable harness? Need some help learning how to have happy leash walks? Ask your local science informed and positive reinforcement dedicated dog trainer.

Are you off leashing at the beach because your local dog park is a hot smelly mosh pit? We understand. Talk to your councilor about how your municipality could adopt better green space planning practices by integrating animal behaviour science, using things like separate entry and exit gates, double gates, distinct agility and sensory features so dogs with different personalities and needs can find a space to do what they love, curving pathways and hills to prevent fixating across an open field, water features, and so much more. Councilor or muncipal staff interested in learning more? Send them our way! [email protected]
