As fast as donations come in, they’re gone again. The need is overwhelming, and they can’t keep up without help.
Their biggest needs right now:
Dog kibble
Cat kibble

If you can donate pet food or supplies, please do! Every bag helps keep a pet fed and a family supported.

Does your dog enjoy splashing around in the lake during hot summer days? Before heading in, be sure to check for any water advisories. Certain conditions—like high bacteria levels, blue-green algae (https://www.ontario.ca/page/blue-green-algae), or strong currents—can make some areas unsafe for swimming. Always keep a close eye on your pup and prioritize their safety.

The importance of 4DX testing! This test is a simple test done in hospital, which detects not only tick borne diseases but also Canine Heartworm. Even though heartworm is not as prevalent in our area, it is still out there!

Heartworm disease is caused by tiny worms called filarial worms. The early form of these worms, called microfilaria, develop inside female mosquitoes before they can infect animals like dogs.

Here’s how the process works:

Mosquito Bites an Infected Animal: When a female mosquito bites an animal that already has heart-worms, it takes in microfilaria from the animal’s blood.

Larvae Develop Inside the Mosquito: Inside the mosquito, the microfilaria grow and go through two molts, changing into infective third-stage larvae.

Larvae Move to Mosquito’s Mouth: These infective larvae then travel to the mosquito’s mouth parts, ready to be passed on.

New Host Gets Infected: When the mosquito bites another animal (like a dog), the larvae enter through the skin.

Worms Grow Into Adults: Inside the new host, the larvae travel through the body and eventually grow into adult worms, living in the heart and nearby blood vessels.

In this patient we detected the microfilaria on a blood smear after running a 4DX test. This was detected at one of our 4DX clinics we ran this season. You can see the larvae wiggling around through the blood cells. 🪱🦟Don't forget... It's not too late if you haven't had your pooch tested this year!

The Barrie Air Show will take place from June 6–8th this year. While the aerial displays and low-flying jets are an exciting spectacle, they may be distressing for pets. Please take precautions to keep them safe and comfortable during the event.

To this group embarking on such a meaningful journey, have a safe trip to Long Lac, First Nations 58. The journey is approximately 11 hours to Northern Ontario. To bring veterinary care to a remote community takes work. One van is strictly supplies, the other is our team!
Bon voyage, and as always we look forward to a productive outcome vaccinating, and controlling the pet population.
