September is 'Animal Pain Awareness' month - so let's start by talking about signs of pain in cats.
Cats are very stoic and signs of discomfort can be subtle.
One way to assess your cat for pain is using the grimace scale by looking at ear position, orbital tightening, muzzle tension, whisker and head position.
Monitoring for behavioural changes:
- decreased activity, reluctance to jump, play or use the stairs
- changes in temperament, hiding
- changes in eating habits
- inappropriate elimination habits
Monitoring for physical indicators:
- over grooming or excessive licking a specific body part - this may present as barbering
- lack of grooming, some cats may look unkempt or become matted
- difficulty standing
- change in gait
- muscle wasting
