Great info on bloat in rabbits
TELL ME ABOUT GASTRIC DILATION (BLOAT) IN RABBITS 2️⃣of2️⃣
✔️Treatment and Survival
Immediate intervention is crucial:
- Hospitalization for intravenous fluids to treat shock and dehydration
- Pain relief and active warming
- Gastric decompression by passing a tube or—if unsuccessful—emergency surgery to remove the obstruction
- Repeat x-rays, continuous monitoring, and post-operative care
Prognosis depends on how quickly treatment starts and the blockage’s nature, but even with prompt care, not all rabbits survive.
✔️Prevention and Risk Factors
Gastric dilation is not linked directly to diet quality, though fiber-deficient diets may encourage over-grooming or chewing of fibers that lead to obstruction. Regular grooming (especially of long-haired rabbits), avoiding access to carpets and fabric, and maintaining environmental enrichment may help reduce risk.
